hey yall, i got a 70 mav with a 200 and a c4, i have a set of clutch pedals, z-bar and all linkages, clutch assembly (pressure plate, clutch disc and flywheel) and bell housing for a 71 mav with a 200, my question is can i put an alumnium case 3 spd +od SROD into my mav using my 200 bellhousing and related parts? if not, what is required to put the srod behind a 200? if you can provide then, i need specific years and models for the parts i might need because im going to a huge maverick, mustang, granada junkyard this weekend!
I think you will need a spacer in between your bell/tranny.The input shaft on the SROD(most of 'em anyway) is longer than the old 3 speeds. There is an aftermarket spacer,it's about $200 though.Go over to Fordsix.com & check around, there's plenty of good info over there about the 6 stuff.
+ 1 on needing a spacer for the longer input shaft. The SROD's input is an inch longer than the older 60's and 70's manual transmissions. The SROD bell was later used with the Tremec 5 speed transmission
the reason i ask all this, is b/c i have an opportunity to buy an SROD for $150 it is like new (shifter is nice and tight, the gears look very good, and both the input and output shafts are also nice and tight)( it is the one that has a side rail shifter mechanism verses a linkage setup the original 3spd manual mavericks came with. so i guess my question is is all my time and very limited budget worth the advantage of OD? PS: i do know that these trannys arnt up to much abuse, and i only drive mine on vacation or to a car show once in a while (there will be absolutly no racing or "hard" launches, just driving with a little common sense) (im building a true 302, 3spd grabber for a little showing off )
As long as the SROD bell will bolt up to your 6 banger, you're good to go. If not then you'll need a 1" spacer between the bell and transmission to compensate for the longer input shaft.
hey thanks a million!:Handshake now all i gotta do is see if i can find the bell that goes with the trans wish me luck!
This might be a little late but here goes. If your BH is a later one with the wide toploader bolt pattern the 3 spd + OD (better know as SROD) will bolt right up. Though some SROD's have both wide and narrow bolt patterns. Also know if the SROD you are looking at is a Mustang version you will need an adapter/spacer because the Mustang version has the longer input shaft like later trans such a the T-5. There are ways to make the Mustang version fit without a spacer but it gets alittle tricky. They made a BH for the SROD but it was the V8 version. If it is the Truck/Bronco version the input shaft will be the same as an original toploader. In that case no spacer is needed. Also be aware that the Mustang version has the shifter further back on the tailhousing. The Truck/Bronco version has the shifter located as far forward as it can. Also they have different gear ratios. Rebuild kits are available for them. Supposedly the SROD is not a strong trans but have heard stories of it taking a lot of abuse. But for everyday driving it is a good trans with very smooth shifting. Have run one in a Mustang for over 15 years with zero problems. And slightly improved economy. Optimum performance is with 3.25 to 3.73 rear-end ratios. RS NOTE: All this is predicated on the 200 having the same length input shaft as a v8. If not all bets are off. Don't know what the standard input length is on a 6.
