Howdy. I just signed up here because I have a 70 mav that I'm going to fix up for a daily driver. It seems clear to me that I am going to need every bit of advice I can get from you folks through out my project. I will also let it be known that I am a newbie to this. My friend is building an older truck with a 460 3 speed in it and I thought man I want to make my own ride too! Anyway ill get some pics up of the old crate as soon as I can and I look forward to any advice you are willing to give. Thanks guys
Welcome to the site. I haven't found my Maverick yet but expect to have it in the garage before winter. Meanwhile I have been gaining lots of info from the knowledgable folks here.
from Northeast Pennsylvania I see your name is "Big Block" - are you thinking about stuffing one in the Maverick?
Southern Illinois, near Mt. Vernon. And to mav1970.. eeeh kinda. I really want to put a 351 in with a four barrel. But i understand that tower shaving is a must unless i want to unbolt the engine and raise it just for spark plug changes. My plan is thus: Restore the Maverick to it's original condition as much as possible without getting super anal like wheel well trim and original glass stuff like that.Put a 351 in, carbed and an auto transmission. I'm making a daily driver with 300-400Hp basically. I intend to do the outside in like a midnight blue metallic and i'm not sure on the interior. I want it to look nice but not showroom nice. And i want alot of umph behind the pedal
Are you talking Windsor or Cleveland? My Cleveland fit when my engine bay was stock but it was tight using Tubular Automotive Headers and no shaved towers.
Its up in the air. I am strapped for project cash plus i am far from engine worries I think. I have to finish up with a head gasket replacement on a civic then roll my mav onto a concrete pad in front of my house. I need to get the pictures up. Rust removal! woohoo!!
Welcome to the Forum! We already assumed you were strapped for project cash when you posted you had a Maverick. (It's a common theme around here I think.) So there will be plenty of advice on budget minded repairs and mods to find!
Here's a 351W in a stock engine bay: Here's a 351C in the same engine bay: It's not for the faint of heart. SPark
That's a tight fit either way, it looks. I will probably go with the Windsor since it looks to have a little better clearance. I'm trying my best to stay realistic with my project since this is the first time i have ever done something like this. Will i need to beef up the front end shocks, suspension elements etc because of the bigger 351? I don't think i will mess with power steering.
