OK, i gotta 1972 Ford maverick, 302 2v, 3-spd automatic, column shift. Now for my problem. The car has been in the family for about 8 years now. My stepdad had it til now and didnt really do much to it. The transmission about a year ago stopped shifting properly. The car has been sitting where its parked since. Now, when i say stopped shifting properly, i dont mean its slipping or that it was a progressive fault leading to the current situation. No, it was a sudden, wake up one morning going to work, start up the road, 1st gear, perfect, 2nd gear, slightly hesitate, but pulled fine, 3rd gear....what happened?!?! no 3rd gear, instead, nuetral, then 2nd again, hmmm....any ideas??? i took the car to a transmission "specialist" who gave me the run around on problems finding parts, problems finding proble, ect. finally that situation concluded in them telling me that it needs a vacuum control module and they were searching for the part, only to later find out they changed locations without notifying us and had our car towed to a salvage yard. well a few attorneys later we got the car back in need of more body work than before, and still same problem as when we took them the car. so, if anyone has any idea what the problem is, or if they were accurate on the prognosis, please tell. also, help on finding parts to fix the problem would be appreciated.
if it's only a vacuum modulator they can be found at any NAPA store. I don't think i'd trust their diagnoses though. Probably why their not in business anymore. C-4 parts can be found at any auto parts store.
The Vacuum modulator only controls part throttle shifts. If it was bad it might shift very late. 1-2 shift would happen at 30 mph, 2-3 shift would happen at about 50. Manual first and second should work fine. Reverse should work fine. If you can tell me what is going on, when it happens then i can tell you where the problem is and what it will take to fix it.
