About a month ago I tore into my 72 Mav. It has the 250 straight 6. There was a number of issues with it. The guy I bought it from found it in a barn and did the body work, all new seals, and new interior. Mechanically it was "farm fresh". I just bought it and drove it last summer, but the carb kept clogging up with rust. the vacuum advance on the distributor was frozen, it has 4 wheel manual drum brakes (very scary at times, especially in the rain). I started with the carb and distributor. I got a carb rebuild kit from Oreillys and a rebuilt distributor from autozone. As for the brakes, I have a set of 1975 Mav spindles, discs, etc. from a past 1970 Mav project. The drum brakes I sold on here. Yesterday I tackled the fuel lines and gas tank. I had originally bought a gas tank restore kit from Eastwood but after getting the tank out and looking inside it was obvious the chemical way of prepping the tank that Eastwood reccomended wasn't going to cut it. As you all probably know there arn't gas tanks available for 70-73 mavs. I was lucky to find a guy at a radiator place who specializes in restoring gas tanks. So today I took it to him and he's going to cut it open, sandblast everything, coat it, and weld it back together (250 bucks). I got a new fuel pump, just so everything is new. The fuel lines I heard through the grapevine could be fabricated from my old ones by another guy at a transmission supply shop. I took them to him today and he said no prob. he could make them but it would be 120 bucks (OUCH) so I opted for some new age hose they have in stock for half the price including hangers. Hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks I'll have this thing back on the road. O'yeah, I'm also doing wheels and tires. I have a set of 14 inch grabber slots for the front and 15 inch Ansen sprint slots for the rear. I'm going to paint them satin black to match the stripes with a red strip around the bead. Using grabber center caps with the bull horn emblem that I found in a junkyard 25 yrs ago.
You can get brane new pre-bent steel fuel lines from Right Stuff Detailing in Columbus, OH. A lot cheaper than $120
The hose I ended up buying is a 3\8 inner diameter gas, nitrous, and keroscene, resistant 500 lb. hose. I bought 17 ft. of it and 8 clamps for 47.50. This hose will still be there when the mav is rusted away and gone. Found out a guy uses it for his 70 chevelle drag car nitrouse and fuel lines. It's called terminator and made by Hoig.
