Hello, fellas......I retired, got booted out, from the autobody fixit biz at the end of Feb, 2014. I had revived a long dormant project 1951 FORD F1 Panel Truck two years ago and am now in the middle of the engine portion of the project. The 302 engine came from a 1973 Maverick more door, auto, air, & ps. Hence my interest in this site/forum. I'm having dificulty finding Maverick specific mechanical information for the engine, and dare not assume that it is all the same as a 'Stang, or othe FORDs of that year, 1973. I also have a '73 Ranchero, mildly built 351W, AC, PB, PS, AOD, and nothing below the valve covers looks the same. I had originally done the major buiild work on the Mav engine over thirty years ago including +.020 TRW forged pistons, home ported heads, 260 Comp Cam, and am now into finishing up the externals: Edelbrock F4B intake & valve covers, MSD RTR dizzy, shorty SS 'Stang headers, and ARP SS bolt package. Over the years I have lost track of most of the external accessories for this mill including most of the front dress, belts, pulleys and brackets for the full load. I had no idea what went where so I started with the waterpump, left lower hose, Found some AC brackets and dummied up a York compressor. Found more brackets for the PS, but since the donor car was totaled on the LF, the PS slotted adjusting bracket is bent and also may need spacers. Finally figured out the alternator mounting using an aluminum adaptor bracket on the right head. So now my quest and questions are: 1) What kind of waterpump pulley do I need, I'm thinkin' 2V. 2) What four bolt crank pulley do I need, 3V?. 3) And how are the the three drive V belts arranged? 4) Also are the rubber motor mounts the same or different left to right, they are side specific on my Ranch. Any help from out there, pictures would be most helpfull.....RooDog
Yes, your FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive) used a 2 groove water pump pulley, and also used a 3 groove crank pulley. These same parts were also used on the 351W's of that vintage, so if you have parts from a 351W, then you can use these. Not 100% but I think the alternator belt was the inside belt, then the P/S then the A/C.
Thanks, BadDad.... I spent the afternoon on this puppy and it seems to be lining up like you say. BTW: My 351W only has a single V WP pulley, the Alt is belted directly to the crank between the inboard PS and the outer most AC. It does look as though it would work with a longer belt + a 2V on the WP. But it all will depend on what the diameters of the crank pulleys are. If the two inner V's are the same then I will belt over the WP and Alt + PS, But several of the crank pulleys I am seeing on eBay have three different sizes, in which case I have to feed the Alt independently of the WP. I've spent the last two weeks trying to figure this out. It's hard to do without clear illustrations and missing parts. Once again, thank for sheding light on my quest....RooDog
I've never seen the alternator driven singly off the crank pulley, always off it and the water pump pulley. The P/S and A/C were nearly always off the crank and not around the W/P too. The A/C set would include an adjustable idler to tension the belt.
I dunno for sure if this is what you have... Pict of my '72 Comet belt wrap which was same as some of the earlier Ford products... My car was a late prod(6/72), already had the EGR intake that wasn't out officially till '73... Only two grooves are necessary on crank for P/S and alt, mine has three because of A/C... Hey, Krazey.... Looks like we are on the same page. That's the way my Ranchero, with a '77 T-Bird 351W, looks. And now that I gathered up more pieces for my Maverick today it too is looking like yours, with AC....All is good in FORD city....Thank you, dearly, for the input......RooDog.
Yea, I believe you've nailed it. Now just to take it all back down and paint those ugly parts............ I keep a couple of cans of Rustoleum semi gloss black on hand for this stuff.
Thanks....MLAO. This turns out to be the same configuration as my '73 Ranchero, but it has the front dress from a '77 T-Bird. Yep...On to sandblast & paint.....Maybe chrome some day. Chrome won't get me home, but it'll look good by the side of the road with the hood up...Cheers.....RooDog..
Yep that's exactly how mine looks, notice the apparent after though of cutting the alt bracket for additional fan clearance...
BadDad..... Love your car....& Rustolium is highly underrated....On my old sheetmetal, been setting out for about 30 years and the metal was still clean under the red Rusolium when the other coatings (gray primer) had failed. And it is sandable too, and laquer thinner on a rag don't faze it....Good stuff All my stuff lines up well except the PS pulley. The one I have is not dished enough, the belt sets about 1/4" forward. I eyeballed the Ranch'o and there is a visable differance. Well that will be my quest tomorrow....RooDog...'Night y'all
