Hi , I bought a 76 Comet pretty well loaded , 302/C4 drive train. It has a rubber front bumper and I'd like to put a chrome one on it instead. The rear bumper is chrome and to me the front bumper looks out of place. It's hard to find much info about Mavericks or Comets , much less parts. I've looked around the internet and I stumbled on this site. You can't beat the experience of others who have done it before so I appreciate any help that I can get. My first question is will any Maverick front chrome bumpers fit a 1976 Comet. You can find more Mavericks around than Comets. Next , the front floor pans are rusted out and I think Maverick pans will fit. I wish you could buy new replacement pans but I've not found anyone who sells them. And last, if anyone can suggest any catalog companies that sell Maverick/Comet parts , I'd appreciate it. I'm a FoMoCo man all the way and if you cut me I bleed Ford blue. This is my first Mercury and it's a keeper. Thanks in advance for any help. Take Care, Wayne
to the site. In 1973, Mavericks and Comets went to a medium-sized front bumper, and retained the smaller 70-72 bumper in the rear, but with mounts that pushed the rear bumper out farther. In 1974, both front and rear bumpers went LARGE. All Maverick and Comet front bumpers from 1974-1977 will fit your 76 Comet. The 'big-bumpered' Comets tend to make it look as if the front bumper is MILES away from the car. Search this site for "Comet Bumper Tuck" if you want to reduce the overhang of the bumper. The following vendors sell Maverick/Comet parts and both have well-stocked catalogues both on-line and in print: Auto Krafters Melvin's Classic Fords Of course, you can always browse the Classified Section of this site for people selling parts, or post a Wanted Ad for things you are looking for in the Wanted Section. Your 76 will have the floor pans with the 'hump' on the passenger side of the trans tunnel made for a catalytic converter. This was added in the 1975 model year. Most people here use first-generation Mustang floor pans, with some trimming and cutting to fit. No one at this time reproduces new Maverick/Comet pans.
Since you are new to Mavericks and Comets, and you asked for help: I suggest you join the Maverick/Comet Club International (MCCI). Great resource for information, meets, and parts. www.MaverickCometClub.org
