Hey everyone, I just wanted to start my thread up so i have it for my new car.

Picking it up tomorrow, a single owner 1977 Mercury Comet with a IL 6 with 44000 original miles. Was able to pick it up for 1000 running. I will have photos tomorrow when i get her offloaded. Quick question, I will be fixing the rust up, but I plan to repaint it the same color that was once there. Can i just put POR 15 on the spots that are repaired, than just scuff up the rest and paint directly over it the stock color? Or do i need to primer it all?

Thanks, I'll keep you all posted will all updates and pics.

Be careful what paint you use to cover stock paint. I've had trouble doing it that way. Made some more work for myself this summer....

i would say it's not so much the color. if you put paint over factory paint that is incompatible it can cause it to do strange things.

Honestly, I'd get the best primer you can afford that matches the paint you want to use and do it that way.

Okay repair what needs repair and than just scuff everything evenly and prime the entire exterior and begin with the color afterwards... sound right. Oldest car I've delt with. Sorry for my ignorance. My oldest car before was an 87 toyota mr2

Are YOU planning on painting the car yourself?

I am, I have painted in the passed but it was for a repair of a trunk. That car didn't have rust to repair. I'm just unsure of the process to go about after repairing the rust
