    3rd Annual MCG National Gathering
July 16-18, 2009 in Joplin, MO
The Maverick Comet Group will be returning to Joplin, MO for the 3nd Annual MCG National Gathering. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again.

    Host hotel
    La Quinta Inn Joplin
    3320 S Rangeline Rd
    Joplin, MO 64804 View map
    Phone: 417-781-0500
Rate*: $69/night, includes deluxe continental breakfast.
    Check-in time: 3pm, check-out time: 12pm.
*mention the Maverick Comet Group when making reservation. Our block of rooms will be held until 30 days prior to the event. If you don't make your reservation before then, you may not get a room anywhere in town!

When you check in, make sure you mention you are with the MCG and ask for your information packet. We are putting toghether a packet of information including the event schedule, maps for cruise routes and a list of things in the area you might choose to check out during your free time or if you are arriving early. Last year, the north parking lot had plenty of trailer parking and was well lit and close to the outdoor pool area.

    Event Schedule
    Wednesday
No planned activities, but for those that are arriving early, there are lots of things to see and do in the Joplin area. Or, just chill out next to the indoor or outdoor pool after your drive to Joplin.

    Thursday

Thursday morning, we will head to West Mineral, KS to see Big Brutus -- a 16 story, 11 million pound retired electric shovel. You will be blown away at the sheer size of this behemoth. After the tour we will enjoy a picnic lunch in the pavilion near Brutus before heading back to Joplin. The cost of the tour is $7.50 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4.50 for children ages 6-12, and children 5 and under are FREE!
A few miles before we get to West Mineral, we will take a short detour through Weir, KS to visit an neat old Texaco station. There you can pull up next to the pumps for a quick photo, and then we're off to see Brutus.

Drag nite - The 3nd annual MCG Bracket Nationals and unlimited test and tune at MO-KAN Dragway from 6-9pm. We will leave the hotel shortly before 5pm so we have plenty of time to unload and get ready for racing. Whether you have a stock six banger or a monster V8, you will have a blast. You don't have to be fast to have fun. Last year's closest racing was between the six cylinder Mavs and the loaded car haulers! Same goes for the bracket race. You don't have to be the fastest car to win -- just ask last year's champ, Ron Perrier, who finally dethroned reigning champ John Ford. This is a fixed-cost event for the club. The more people that participate, the lower the cost will be for everyone.

    Friday
Friday morning, we will head out on a short, scenic cruise to the George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, MO. The monument features a museum exploring Carver's life and discoveries, a nature trail, and a hands-on lab where the kids (that are not alergic to peanuts) can make peanut milk. Afterward, you can head back to Joplin for lunch, or enjoy a picnic lunch at the park pavilion. Best of all, this tour is FREE! (donations are accepted by the museum)

Evening - Group dinner at Ryan's Family Steakhouse, followed by the club meeting in hotel meeting room. Exact time tbd.

    Saturday
Show and shine (judged and non-judged), cookout, kids games and activities at Landreth Park. We will be at the south shelter. There are also lots of shade trees near the show area.

Saturday evening those that want to participate will cruise together to a popular local cruise-in near the hotel.

    Nightly
Hanging out with your fellow MCG members in the hotel parking lot swapping stories, bench racing, checking out the cars.

I'm going to check Monday and see if I can get the week off work. If I can, I'm going to make every effort I can to cruise out there in the '72.

Matt, There is no mention of the "circling the gas station cruise" or the "terrorize the old folks home" cruise. Have these events from last year been cancelled?:rolleyes: :D

    Thanks for posting Matt.
Looks like the MCG really thought about family when planning these events.
And with the tough economy, all of the prices are easy on the wallet!

heck....bring your car finished, unfinished, shiny, dull, painted or not. Don't even need a car to show up and have a great time!
One event with the MCG and you will find out that the cars are just part of the fun.

Mapquest says 1038 miles one way. I haven't driven it more than 75 miles at once before. And july with only 2/40 air. Wow sounds perfect :thumbs2:

My son has virtually no interest in cars, but can't wait until this year's Gathering. As we drove out of the hotel parking lot last year, he asked if we were coming back in 2009! :thumbs2:

    (We are! :bananaman)

I'm just very interested in that car, I doubt I'll be going, it's hard to get any time away from work these days...not much of a recession in my business.

Well Gene, you'll just have to settle for me. Ruth and I will be there with the Grandaughters. They wanted to know if we'd be back this year before we even left last year. It was great, and I'm sure this years will be just as good. If not better. All cars are welcome, no matter what stage they are in.:)
