1974 Comet 250 Auto A/C Does anyone know how to and/or where to get a single or split headers for this application. Thanks
Here's a link to a forum that you'll regret you came acro$$. Lots of good info there on performance opts for the small and 'big' Ford Sixes. http://www.fordsix.com/
mustangsunlimited.com has one too. its a little cheaper but only a single out, i''d get the 2bbl carb first tho, its a little cheaper and will add more power. a header wont do much to a stock engine but make it sound a little better
I found a mini low mount starter. Am i gonna need this to clear the header or should the stock starter be ok? Gotcha bout the carb. I6's sound bad ass with headers i think. P.s. thanks for the link
starter clearence on a 250 is a pita since most headers out there are designed for the 170's and 200's found in falcons and mustangs with the high starter. if you notice on the 250 the starter is next to the oil pan, on the smaller 6's its above the oil pan next to the block. another thing to keep in mind is 250's use the same starter as a 302 so if you can find a mini-302 starter is should be a good fit on the 250. keep us updatd on what you find, ive got a header on my wish list too
A mini starter will really make life easier for you. I did that on my 250 and the headers fit really well with it. Here is what my starter and header looks like.
Those headers off the mustangunlimited.com will do just fine thanks. I found a Hey Gene where did you get that mini starter @? I've found them but no cheaper than $200. Any suggestions?
I got it on ebay. It's from a guy that does this as a business and these are brand new starters...and the price was right at $64 plus shipping. I don't have the info with me right now but can get it tonight. It came with very easy to understand wiring instructions too. Was a breeze to install.
I have a Mustangs Unlimited header on my car. It took just a slight bit of modification to get it to work. The collector was pointing too far to the passenger side of the car, and was hitting the passenger frame rail. There was no way the exhaust pipe would have fit. I fixed it by cutting about a 1/4 inch wide V out of the header about 3/4 of the way around about two inches up from the collector, then just took a rubber mallet and tapped the header flange to close the gap back up, causing the collector area to move over enough to clear. My dad then TIG welded the area I cut back closed. It took alot of trial fitting to get it cut just enough, it is very tight down there, the flange of the header dosen't have much clearence between the bell housing and frame rail. You'll be cussing when it comes time to bolt the exhaust pipe up to the header. Fuction wise, it helps seat of the pants power a little bit. I lost a bit of low end torque, but on the interstate it picks up much better when you get on it. Between the header and MSD 6AL box and coil, I picked up a measureable amount of gas mileage on the interstate.
Jamie, that would be a shorty header if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, those will cause a loss of some low end torque but do help in the mid to upper power range. Mercom74, if you can find a set of long tube dual collector headers you will like the seat of the pants feel better as the long tubes boost low end torque...but they are hard to find for a 250. I believe Mike at classicinlines.com may have a set of long tube pacemakers but they will cost ya.
I just checked ebay and they are now going for $45...but he soaks you $20 for shipping. Still at $65 for a brand new high-torque mini-starter it's still a good deal. His name is John Matheson and the company is A1truck...here is the link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-MINI-STARTER-BRAND-NEW-MUSTANG-AND-OTHERS_W0QQitemZ170161683822QQihZ007QQcategoryZ33576QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If this link doesn't work, just do a search for ford mini-starter and look for the description that says "brand new Mustang and others". Good luck.
