Have an all original low mileage (30k) 74 Comet 250ci that had run very well. It started to start hard and run rough, then turned into overheating. Now it will barely start and when it tries sounds like it’s way off time. I have checked TDC and rotor is at cyl #1, so it doesn’t seem to have jumped the timing gear etc. Coil checks out, plugs, wires, cap and rotor all new, fresh fuel etc. Any ideas where to start from here?

It takes 3 things to run: fuel, spark, and air. Start with the basics and go from there. Sounds like you have spark, so I would look at fuel. Clogged fuel filter, carb needing rebuilt, etc.
