    Hi, I have a 72 grabber with a straight 6 200. I like the car alot but it doesnt have enough power. What would I be in for if I were to take a 289 3 spd from a 64 comet and put it in the maverick? I dont want to make the 302 swap. Thanks

    289=302

    The 289 windsor block and the 302 windsor block are the same external dimensions. Exactly the same ammount of work is involved to put a 289 in your car as it is to put a 302 in your car. :huh: Sorry it is not any easier.

    hi, :Welcome:

    you will still have to do the same things as a 302...
    do a search for ...302 swap...and you will find a list of parts you will need...

    good luck...got any pics?

    The 64 289 will have a 5 bolt bell housing. This will limit you to early style transmissions only. I assume the 3 speed you refer to is a manual trans, if so manual transmission linkage for a v8 Maverick and Comet can get expensive.
    Like others said same work whether you do a 289 or a 302.

    Good call on the bellhousing there...
    5 bolt for sure.

    The good thing is that the Comet engine mounts and frame stands will likely fit the Maverick! Make sure to get those out of the donor car.

    The transmission will bolt up to a 5 bolt bellhousing IF you have a machine shop turn down the bearing retainer to the correct size. My machine shop did this for free and this was the first time I ever did business with them so it shouldn't cost much if any.

    I could be wrong on this but the 64 Comet will have a 3 peice mount like my Falcon and the engine will sit higher in the bay. Don't the Maverick's share the same mount as the Mustang? I still learning about the Mavericks but I know more about the old Comets

    I would rather have a 289 than a 302.
    I don't know why, I just would.
