Since it looks like the 5.0/t-5 is a distant goal, i want something a little more sporty than the column shift.

How difficult is it to change the manual column shift to floor shift? What parts are needed and how much would they be? I have a 71 with the 170 and 3-speed.

    thanks for your help.

All you need is an after market shifter and a hole in the floor. The shifter should come with a floor plate and boot. Then you follow the directions to hook it up and adjust it.

Just remember, if you do convert, you need to lock the steering collar in the reverse position and move the back up light switch down to the shifter.

I have a complete floor shift rear tranny housing that includes all the correct linkage. Just bolt it in an go ... includes the bar that runs up to the steering column lock as well. PM me if interested .... makes for an easy conversion ...

What's the purpose of this mod and would it apply to an auto-on-column being converted to a floor shift?

To get the key out. Only comes out in Park on autos and reverse on manuals. As Dan stated in his offer, there is a linkage that attaches to the base of the steering column that rotates the collar in the up position when you put it in reverse. Yes, an auto would also have to be locked in the park position. With Dan's parts you would not have to relocate the back up light switch.
