Hello, Does anyone know if the 1971 Comet already has the bolt hole on the roof frame for a 3 point set belt. The 71 originally came with lap belts only as far as I know. Thanks!
As far as I know-all American and Canadian made Mavericks and Comets, no matter what year, had shoulder belts. The early cars just had the 2 part belts.
I had a 71 Comet way back, and have an early 72 now and yes, they both had the shoulder strap. It was an odd arrangement that locked into the lap belt after you buckled up. It was very common to take these out, because they were stored along the roof at the door opening, and would bean you in the head getting in the car, as the elastic wore out. If your car had the headliner redone, it is quite possible that the shoulder belts were removed prior and then the headliner was finished without the holes for the shoulder bolts ever being cut. If this is the case, you ought to be able to feel where fitting for the bolt is pressed into the ceiling framework. It is round. Here is a pic of my car to give you an idea where to look ... ....
Roger, Those belt drops are 10" long and out of a mid-90s Ford Church Van (10 passenger or whatever ....) They don't look out-of-place, fit in really nice with a factory-looking interior. I have mocked-up the belts, and this is a really good height too. I haven't permanently installed the belts because they are a set of Auto Locs, and I am not sure that I am happy with the way they look.... the buckles are too modern, so I may seek out ones that look more original yet.
