I have a 67 289 with A BAD HARMONIC BALANCER ! does nayone know if a 302 balancer will work my 289 has a 3 bolt pattern and I think most 302,s have 4 bolt holes but if a 302 balancer will work I can change pulleys as well, just need help from anyone who is more up on this info thanks
302 balancer will work, so long as it is same 28 oz., imbalanced as your 289, but like you mention, will have to change over to 4 bolt crank pulley. Earlier 302 balancers from 68-70 used 3 bolt pulleys. Or you can rebuild or probably the easiest, why not buy a new 289 balancer? Then you don't have to worry about using some 40 year old balancer, which may have "issues" too......... David
You can drill some holes in the 3-bolt pulley and put it on the 4-bolt damper. The pulley is located by a raised lip in the center of the damper, you can't put it on off-center. One of the bolt holes will align, put a bolt in it and drill holes for the three other bolts. Or get an aftermarket damper that comes with bolt holes for 3- and 4-bolt pulleys. That's what I'm running.
If it was me I'd get the correct balancer. You might run into belt alignment problem and timing mark location.
