For any who are interrested in keeping up with my project saga (as well as your own) I think I am going with a 302 instead of a 351 simply because that 302 for $50.00 does come complete with everything BUT the intake and the carb. So tomorrow I will be going there and I will see if I can get it to turnover by hand. If everything seems to be moving ok it will be mine to start to play with!! :D !!!

The engine has NEVER been opened and it is stock so no bore yet was out of an older Lincoln and it is being sold to me for cheap because I know the guy who has it and he has 3 of them just sitting in his garage with no plans to do anything with any of them.

Sooo...I will give updates to any who are interrested in my saga...

Ps still looking for a dash pad!! ;)

    I'll help if I can

    Hi Jacki,

Your choice for going with a 302 instead of a 351W is a very good one!

    Now her are my reasons for what I'm saying;

    1) your 302 will fit without any mods.

    2) you will find that when you have to work on the motor it will be a hell of a lot easier.

    3) all in all a 347 or 302 is a much better choice for anyone who doesn’t have the time, money or experience to shoe horn a 351W or 351C into a Maverick.

If I can help please just give me a email and I will do what I can.
By the way are you buying a junk yard motor?
If so let me know before you buy and I might be able to help you.
Talk to you soon, take care.

    302

The motor is out of a friend of mine garage...he does not know too much about it his cousin dropped it off with intentions of a rebuild but never got around to it..and moved on to other things. I can get the engine for $50.00 (providing it turns over) Jimmie is taking a gallon of WD40 over tomorrow and putting a bar on it to see what happens. Last my friend heard the engine was runnng when it was pulled out and it has been stored in the garage. Was it filled with anything before sitting..well no, but my thought is if it looks like it will turn and it is not visibly shot it is only $50.00 to burn and I should be able to pull enough stuff off of it to get my $50.00 back if it is an anchor. Now I know I am going at this blind as a bat (and I am pouting about the 351w) but I am still very excited and if I can keep that on my side I wont get bored!! Jimmie keeps telling me I can make a mean lil 302 and not have the headaches of the install on the 351 but I still am pouting!! LOL

So I will know tomorrow a little more about the engine!!

    :p me

    dont underestimate the 302

here in memphis, we used to drag race on friday and saturday nights. the car that inspired me to own my 1st maverick, was a 302 maverick, that ate everything alive!
it was an ugly, homely little maverick. it had a 302, and looked like your typical I6 to V8 conversion.
kinda skinny tires, sawed off shifter at the column, after-market shifter on the floor, no cosmetics whatsoever!
ive always been in the Ford camp, and that little maverick was much badder than a VERY BAD 289 mustang, and nitrous 302 Fairlane.
but i watched that ugly little maverick put down a very customized 68 charger 440 RT, that was built!
he also beat a very loaded 71 mach 1 with a cleveland.

as a matter of fact, i never saw that maverick lose a race.
(the car was a crowd favorite)

i cant tell you how that thing was built. i looked at that engine and the whole car, and it was a 302.
i saw nothing on it that led me to believe it would be one of the fastest street cars ive ever seen.
maybe a wolf in sheeps clothing, but that 302 maverick inspired me to believe that it was a complete hot rod package.

you tweak it right, you will forget you ever wanted to shoehorn a 351 in it.
(fwiw.. a 302 is a pretty tight fit in its own right)

nothing against any other motors. obviously a 351 is capable of more than a 302. however, that 302 quite capable of propelling your maverick to astonishing speed, without all the hassles.

    Maverick Haven

    Hi Jacki,

I live in Maverick Haven or something close to it, what I'm saying is that almost all the local wrecking yards here have a very good number of Mavericks. (must be why Auto Krafters is only 10 miles from my house)

Kathy and I would love to have you and your huband come and spend I weekend junk yard shopping, and maybe you could bring your maverick so we could get a look at it.

As far as the dash pads go keep a close eye on eBay every once in a while there is one on there.

Very good 302's here go for about 250.00 but sometimes you can fine one for 150.00

Engines are easy to find, Maverick parts are a little more of a pain in the butt.

Let me know if I can help.

    how to for 351

on the fordmaverick.com messageboard there is a guy named wylie. He did a pretty elaborate writeup on his swap, and its still in the archives, just search for: the definitive guide to a 351w in a mav and jump to that thread. he's got pics galore too.
