As many of you know I scored a sweet 73 grabber on ebay a couple mths ago and sold it to my brother. Anyway he loves it but just plunked down the money to build a badazz 331 stroker. Basic build 331 ci afr185 heads 3.70 gears 9 inch locker coan c4 with coan 3200 stall balanced and blueprinted Cam is undecided. Open to suggestions. hyd. roller I am guessing 425 hp to maybe 450hp. ANybody else build a 331. I will add details as we go. Hoping to have motor in by the 05 nationals. My brother and I are gonna make this one together. We are nationals "virgins" and can't wait to race you guys.
Talked to a custom cam shop Called Cam research and they recommended this cam .555 lift on both I and E 230@.050 duration on I 234@.050 duration on E 108 degree lobe seperation angle I was close to this in my own guesstimate but was thinking 110 degree lobe seperation, and lift at about .542 He explained the 108 lobe seperation would make it rev up faster and the 185 heads will like the extra lift. Seemed to know his $hit. Scott at cam research was recommended by some people on FordMuscle.com that have used his cams. He said if I was going to make it strictly race it would be a much different cam but listened to my needs to be a streetable yet powerful cam for weekend warrior blasts down the strip. I think I will call Ed curtis as well. He is supposed to be the "BEST" we shall see as they say......
Yeah Scott knows his stuff alright. I did talk to Ed myself as well. Nice guy and he shoots straight with you, whether you like it or not, but he's definetly a salesman and will sell you what he thinks you need. I told him I was tinkering with porting my E jr heads and he told me that I should just plunk down nearly $2000 and buy the AFR 225's. He did say that they'd kick the carp out of the Jrs....but $2000 is hard to let go of and seeing what he had done with Steve Olson's Mustang (418w) (you'd have to read the story on FM) it made me think twice about using Ed's stuff. I'm sure he knows his stuff, just too much of a salesman to me. I went with the cam that Scott recommended. Hope it works as well as the Comp I was using if not better. Sounds better and revs faster than the old comp (as if I needed it to rev faster LOL) but that doesn't mean a thing until I get the ET slip. Dad's 331 uses a little bigger camshaft, but also operates at a higher RPM than what you'll be doing. With the one Scott recommended, it outta be a torqey engine all the way through the band (up to about 6200-6500....you'll never get a Hyd roller engine to rev past that and make any power w/o a rev kit). One thing about 331's is that the reciprocating assembly is very lightweight and it'll rev extremely quick. I guarantee you'll be looking for some sticky tires before too long....you'll need 'em.
I'd get the flow numbers on those heads and see what stage porting 1-3 will give you. May be worth the extra bucks. Some dome forged pistons to bump up the compression a bit and a 254 duration on the cam to let that baby breath and bring the stall up to about 4500. Port match your intake and exhaust openings, slap on a victor jr. intake and a holley 750, 4150 and get ready to rumble. Hmmm...I'm glad it's your money I'm spending here and not mine...
sounds like a sweet package. I would add, call AFR and see what cam they recommend with them heads and your application. Its just a phone call....you never know.
I have a 347 but the cam Isnt that big went with a smaller cam with the cu in more for street use!!!!!!!! But it will still run strong!!!!!!!! Have to get the car together then if not satisfied,I can always add things to make it better, Faster and so on. sounds like a good combination a Stroker in a GRABBER THAT IS ALLRIGHT WITH ME!!!!!!!!! WISH I HAD A GRABBER.GUESS IL JUST HAVE TO GRABHER, COM HERE BABBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAVE A MERRY X-MASS EVERY ONE!!
