Anyone have any good ideas for a tranny for a mostly street, limited strip mav? The car will have a 331 or 347 stroker and should have a little over 400 hp. I'm thinking maybe a Tremec 5 or 6 speed manual, basically a stronger version of the T-5 found in many newer mustangs. What do you guys think? What other options should I consider? If any of you knows how the bellhousing clearance would come into play here, let me know.

    If you're hell-bent on a 5 speed, I'd say Tremec, however, I'd recommed looking into a built C4 automatic with a 2800-3000 stall convertor.

I've seen too many guys go through stock trannies and clutches only to wind up (finally) getting a C4 or AOD in some street/strip cases. The AOD or AODE's are a little wider than the others but are worth the trouble (to the guys I've talked to).

I had an AOD converted to E for street/strip usage in a 90 Mustang convertible (very heavy car). The transmission was "built" to withstand 700 h.p. - no, I never put that much to it, but it saw plenty of street time and numerous 3500 rpm launches and never once gave me any trouble. If cost is an issue (as it is to most of us), then the 'built' AOD may not be the way to go as it can cost around $1700 to have built.

The C4 (3 speed automatic) is lighter and narrower than the AOD's but no 4th gear (if doing a lot of highway driving).

If you go with AOD, I ran a 437 gear with no problems street/strip and would recommend the same for you. I consistantly ran 1.5XX" 60 foots with the AOD setup.

    Good luck either way,

    Rick
