how long were 351W's made and what can they be found in? I read something on ebay about a guy having a core 351W from a 91 van...

Are they that common that I should be able to find good cores in trucks and vans from the late 80's early 90's?

Every time I try to look for 351W history I get Mustang and boss302 crap from the late 60's... damn internet.

351W have been built from 1969 to present. Some truck applications utilized low compression heads to prevent detonation when hauling heavy loads.

there were so many variations of the 351w, its confusing. Most of the changes were compression ratio, intake, and smog equipment. From what I'm told, they're all basically the same design, except in '82 they changed to a one-piece rear main seal. Supposedly the 68-70 models had better heads, but also a taller deck height (9.50 vs. the usual 9.48). The '75 truck head also had larger valves, and visibly larger intake ports--I have a set of those I'm working on now. In '77, the 351w and 302 heads became the same, both with the same small ports, large water passages on each end of the head, and small 1.78/1.45 valves. VERY strong blocks--the main caps are almost identical to the 460's.

so then I should have NO trouble finding a core... or even a useable engine.

Probably going to go this route since my "other" idea will either be: A) just as expensive as a running new Ford core but technically sound (though still overly complicated), or B) cheap as Hell like I figured but the custom work involved make it likely to grenade if not done perfectly (not worth the chance). Ah well - it was fun to do the research...

    big & bad

The ones to look for are in trucks and vans. Usually they'll have a C-6 behind them, but putting a C-4 is easy. Bolts right up.

    351W info

Hey a guy here in MD has a machine shop and he is moving...selling alot of good stuff...he has a bunch of 302s (he says) and had 3 351W blocks. the one I bought...my brother in law bought one of the others but he still has one left. I dont know what has been done to that one I think bored .30 over and I dont know what you want to pay but I think he wants $400. or so for it. It would come to you dipped and cleaned I know that about the guy. What else it would have I am not sure but I could find out. Mine had block bored .30 over, new forged pistons & rods the crank, new rings and bearins, ARP bolts and he is honing it and balancing it for me when I give him the Dampner, flywheel and a few other parts. I paid a little more than 400 but I am sure he would give you a deal.

    :)
