I was wondering for a 351w install in a maverick, will a front sump oil pan be required to make fitting easy or can I use the factory oil pan?
Uh-Uh. The difference is in the rear pan radius that fits the rear main cap of the Windsor. If the pan rails were wider, then the 289/302 timing covers wouldn't fit. Same timing cover dimensions for all three (289/302/351W)
The 1980-up truck/van 351's had a 3/4 sump pan. It's not front or rear, but 3/4 of the way to the rear. Easiest way to get what you want is buy a new one at the local parts house.
The original oil pan seems to work, It looks like I just have to notch the frame a little bit. Does this seem like a common maneuver?
noch the frame? no that doesnt sound right?? a front sump pan drops in as-is. are you working with an aftermarket 8qt pan or something?
My pan came out of a 1975-6 van. it is a front sump pan and you won't need to cut anything. It is always better to cut the pan than it is to cut the frame.
There were two diffferent stock front sump pans for both the 302 & 351. One was the 5 qt car pan, the other the 6-7 qt. truck pan. The main difference was the length of the sump.
I looked at my blocks and the 351 pan is wider. The timing covers are the same, but the 302 pan turns 90* fast and tight right at the width of the timing cover. The 351w pan turns the 90* to the side pan rails very lazy, making a wider radius turn. Adds a half inch or so per side. Aftermarket 302 blocks use 351w pans because they are wider and allow more room for 'stuff' in the bottom end.
I've seen plenty of front sump oil pans on eBay, but they have no dip stick tube. How would I change or correct that problem?
