Does anyone know about how fast you can spin a stock bottom-end 351w. I did a search but couldnt really find anything. i've also searched the web and found many different opinions. opinions from this board seem to be way more reliable than a lot of stuff people say out on the web. i installed a P.A.W. crank kit, it had remanufactured rods and crank. new rod bolts and pistons. just wondering what i should redline at.
Your particular redline RPM will depend on cam, compression, carb, intake...etc. Most stockers redline around 5000 RPM max. They just dont make any power past that point, even less on some models. That said, I ran a stock crank 351w for 2 years, beating the crap out of it every run. Later I added alcohol injection to the mix to replace the carburetor. Motor loved the 7000+ rpm blasts and finally bit the dust at the end of last season. Broke the main webs out of the block, all but the #5 web was laying in the pan, as well as breaking the crank. Prior to that, the motor had 25 psi oil pressure, whether it was idling or WFO...it held 25 psi, normally it would run up to about 60 at max rpm and 25 idle, but I figure the block had been cracked for a while around one of the main webs, but I just kept pounding on it. 14.2 compression, but I did use Eagle rods (peace of mind). Speaking of which, the stock rods aren't all that great....I'd say keep it under 6500 and you'll be fine, with truck 351w rods. I broke one of those stockers in a 393 stroker once...and belive me, when they break, you'll kick yourself for not buying a set of good H beam rods.
I have found the stock ones wont tolerate going over 6500 but just a couple times. Mavman gave great advice. Dan
thank you guys for the quick responses. i'v got a 512 lift cam with 292/30? duration, heddman headers, edelbrock performer rpm intake, and a 600 cfm carb. not sure what it'll pull too yet, just wanted to know how far i could push it. 7000, man thats screamin. 6500 was the highest i intended. i'm pretty sure i have the "football" truck rods. so it sounds like i should be ok with an occasional 6 grand blast when racing. gonna start replacing my lower control arm today so i can start getting some break-in miles on it. cant wait to see what it'll do. thanks again.
you mean circle track? i'm assuming thats what you mean by turning left. i'm not into that. i think thats a sad fate for a car. i was talking about when i go drag racing. i have a 4.62 third member waiting to be installed, i'm hoping that wont be too deep for the quarter mile with the setup i have. wish there was an eigth mile track around here.
i don't think your going to be happy with 4.62 gears for the 1/4. i'm running 4.33's with my 308 turning 7200 in the traps.
no i was talking if your going to drive it on the streets that when you turn left ....is the pit arm hitting the header tube ??like mine did ?
i had driven it around the block a few times but havent noticed any problems. after reading your last post i went out and checked. sure enough, it is hitting it. thanks for pointing that out, i might not have noticed until i broke something. how did you fix it?
4.62 gears for a 1/4 mile .....before the 393 i had a 351 with 10-1 comp roller rockers the bracket masterII cam 512 lift stock heads with mild work on them best it would turn was 5700rpm my 380 gears did good
no prob sorry to bring bad news ..........i had the pipe remade the guy cut it and put a hump bend on it problem fixed...also had him tighten think it was number 2 make more room where it was rubing the tower
best i can tell you it would have prob ran a 12.70ish ran a few cars on the steet and they ran 13 teens in the 1/4 at the trackit may have ran better then that i pulled them pretty good
Better go with 4.11 or less if you wanna drive it w/o holding up traffic and run 1/4 mile.I also agree with Don,but I'm not much of a gambler so I'd say stay around 6000 or less if it were mine.
