buddy gave me a 351w block out of a 91 ex police car.i want to do a 30 or 40 bore.i found for dirt cheap a new eagle crank that says it has a stroke of 3.85,but says the rod journals are for a chevy 6.2 roddid some looking and all i could find was rods that said they were stock and measured 5.7".is there a such a thing as a stock 6.2 rod,or are they all aftermarket?will a ford piston fit on a chevy rod?,or can you use the chevy piston also?
Your not going to find stock ford rods in those lengths for the windsor. They are all aftermarket. Hawks, Scat, Eagle, legend are some of the makers of the rods. For a windsor they have 6" 6.125" 6.2" 6.250" both in 2.1 jounals and fords size. You may note when looking at rods that the pin sizes for chevy rods may be different. You going to need new pistons anyhow if your stroking your motor. Just make sure they have the correct pin size for the rods your buying which is probably going to be .927 for the setup you mentioned
a soon as i read that the crank is stock ford on the mains, but the rod journals are turned down for a chevy rod,i figured it wouldn't be too easy.i was hoping there was a way to use mostly stock parts.oh well there goes that idea.
My 393 Cleveland is also a 3.85 stroke plus bored out .030 over. My Scat crank has rod journals sized to use Chevy rods. My engine is using Scat 6 inch Chevy rods matched with forged K-B reverse dome pistons to get rid of some of the compression that these strokers build. Of course the closed chamber Boss 351 heads added quite a bit of compression also. I know my engine is a Cleveland but I see many of the machining measurements and products that were used being very similar with the Windsor.
thanks guys for all the help and suggestionsnow i got to see if i can find a crank that will have standard ford rod journals vs. the one i'm looking at that has the chevy journals.
When I deceided to go the stroker route, I believe my engine builder told me that all of the Scat cranks were sized for the Chevy rods. I can't say if all of the aftermarket stroker cranks are that way also.
all the ones i've looked at seem to be that way.i should just get the one i mentioned earlier.it's right up the road from me.still in the box wrapped in the factory plastic, for $50.he decided to go a different route with his build.
on the rods you used, were the top part(where the piston pin goes through) machined to accept a chevy piston or a ford,or do they have to be special to match the rod?
I don't know - I never asked. I don't believe my 4 page bill had anything on it for machining the rod or the wrist pin bore in the piston. Just remember if you go with a longer rod, you have to buy pistons that are built for that combo. They have the wrist pin hole relocated. The whole piston/rod assembly has to be designed to be used with the longer rod and also with the longer stroke. Otherwise your pistons would want to ram themselves through your heads. I'm sure you could get the specs from Scat or Eagle and compare them with a Ford wrist pin size.
