Can anyone help out with Haynes Manual info or just info for installing a timing chain on the '87 351w? So far everything is apart all the way to the timing chain, I just don't know how to align anything up; referring to the timing marks.

should see timing marks on each sprocket (crank sprocket and cam sprocket), the crank sprocket mark should be in the 12 o'clock position (pointing straight up)... the cam sprocket should be in the 6 o'clock position (pointing straight down)...

once installed, these marks should be as close as they can get to one another. after installing the timing set, use a ratchet and socket to rotate the engine by hand 3 revolutions (turns) to make sure the marks line up each time. hope this helps :)

Crank dot needs to be straight up at 12 o'clock. Cam dot can be at either 6 or 12 o'clock. Both aligned with a straight edge.

TRIPLE check, YES triple check your marks, also count the links on chain on both side to make sure they are same number! Did I say triple,,,, YUP TRIPLE check your marks! First couple of times it's easy to be off a tad! Good Luck

The marks just line up from the centers of the gears when they are as close together as they can get. Crank mark at the top and the cam mark at the bottom. line them up as you install the chain and engine gear.

Crank always with the keyway at 12 o'clock, cam can be either at 6 or 12. It makes one revolution for each two of the crank, so either position will work. Some cam gears have the alignment dot at either one or the other.
