I just finished my my 3 g conversion 1 wire. hoping I did everything right 4guage wire from alternator to battery side solenoid. with 200amp in line fuse between. the alternator didn't have a spot for my "I" wire, key switch, so I hooked it up to back of the alternator where the battery cable goes. what do you guys think?
my solenoid on the fender has one. I'm refering to the 3 wire plug on the alternator. only has two and it's integrated
I think the alternator is always "turned on" so will run the battery down... Power to I terminal should be switched, it's the original feed from alt light...
The I wire has been removed and plugged off. I was told it's un needed when using a 1 wire alternator
I think that's only if alt is specifically setup for one wire operation, which AFAIK uses a different regulator... Some alts will turn on without the exciter connection, but just when you start to depend on it, will not charge...
I have a 3G 1-wire on mine. Often they run the yellow sense wire to the output terminal on the rear of the alternator. Then it doesn't adjust for the voltage drop in the charge cable to the battery. Under heavy load the system voltage would drop. I removed the yellow wire from the output terminal, extended it and ran it to the battery + terminal. Now the voltage stays constant no matter what the load and the battery charges quicker.
