In about a year I plan to put a 347 stroker in the mav. I would also like to convert it over to straight shift. I know where a 65 mustang is that has a 289 4spd in it. The car itself is junk. I was wondering if I could use this car to get all the conversion. I friend of mine used a 67 mustang to convert his car over. I was also wondering if it would be a toploader
yes it is a toploader .. I have heard of guys useing other pedals but that is it nothing else will work on your car
Be careful though, there was an early toploader with the narrow pattern and 25 spline output shaft. These aren't as strong as the later ones that have the 28 spline output shaft. Mine is actually the big spline input (1 3/8" 10 spline) and output (31 spline) that originally came in a big block application. But it's been converted to the small block large spline input. Anyhow, there was also a sideloader transmission in the Mustangs, but I think that was limited to the 1964's. Additionally there were a bunch of different tailshaft housings. Take a look at David Keys web site about toploaders, you can learn a lot from that.
Some of the early Mustangs came with the Borg Warner T-10 four speed trans. My 66 GT coup was so equiped. Good trans, not as strong as the toploader and poor (in my opinion) gear ratios, but shifted much easier than toploaders. The manual pedals and V8 clutch linkage, pivots and brackets are not real common, but are out there and available if you look around a bit. You can modify the mustang linkage to fit, but if you are not in a hurry you can find the real thing. Good luck, Farmall
Also if you plan on using the bell housing make sure that it is a six bolt housing and not a 5 bolt housing, and if you are going to use it on a newer block be aware that the roller motor blocks do not have provisions for the motor clutch pivot ball stud, although an adapter kit can be bought. Headers and clutchs are a p.i.a. but doable
