Will it work? It's a small bumper from a 71 4dr (although the bumper says 71 Maverick on the little metalic sticker on the underside of the bumper) and it looked in okay condition, I just want to make sure it'd fit before I buy it since I know certain rear stuff doesn't always fit through the years... Thanks. Oh, mine's a 73 Comet 2dr.
I believe the 73 uses different bumper brackets but they will swap to the new bumper as they are the same
Yes, the 73' brackets extend the bumper further from the tailight panel than the early brackets, but the actual bumper is the same.
Yea, that is correct. The bumper brackets on a '73 makes the rear bumper stick out a little further. You will need to take the bumper brackets off your '73 bumper and put them on the replacement bumper. All small bumpers are the same, regardless of 2 door or 4 door.
Okay, here's a dumb question: What are the bumper brackets? Are they the bits on the side-bottom, just behind the side lamp? (aka, the part holding the bumper on this pic)
See the bolt heads next to the bumper guards below the taillights. Those bolts go into the brackets. The brackets are held to the body by 2 bolts on each bracket which are accessible from inside the trunk.
Actually I would use the brackets from the 71 because it will pull the bumper closer to the car and look much better. Then you can take them goiters off of each side and clean up the look.
