So I got my car in, and on and timing set right. 5.0L EFI. I removed the smog and EGR all that crap. Now it idles really high (1500). It spins out(like doesn't fire, just spins and sucks air) at half throttle or will spit and sputter and backfire. There is a Vacuum tube, suckin mad air, coming off the back between the plenum and firewall. Think It's the Manifold vacuum, When i block it off the car dies. But when I look at vacuum diagrams it's just supposed to go to all the egr stuff that i took off... so I'm confused. Is there a way to cause enough restriction on the manifold vacuum to lower the idle? Anybody with a 5.0L EFI know where the vacuum lines are all supposed to go, or know why my idles so high and the car throttles so wierd? I don't know why i took the vacuum lines off in the first place... but now i don't know where to hook em up, and especially not with all the EGR and Smog pump stuff off.
Good luck with it, all the "stuff" you removed is integral to the engine running properly. If you remove it the computer needs to be dealt with accordingly.
Do you have a vacuum line connected to the pvc valve under the intake mann towards the back? is your efi mass air flow or speed density?
It is speed density. I didn't use a kit. I was hoping to be able to kinda put something together myself and fool the computer to thinking it was still there. I know it's a big part of the car running right, but it can run better without it. I think the PCV valve is connected. I know that one is essential. I have my Fuel Pressure Regulator Hooked up. But what about the Thermactor Air Bypass and Diverter? Do i need to put them on and block the vacuum after those sensors? To be honest I don't know what those two even look like or do... Just seen em on the diagrams. Has anyone gotten a Speed Density 5.0L to run right with the EGR/Smog stuff off, and how?
So Now I got it. So that when it actually starts it runs good just in limp mode, can only go part throttle. But now I have starting problems.... I did change to the post style coil instead of the connector style. But it seems no matter what coil I use it starts really hard. has low spark. even though it turns over at a nice speed. Is there another way to increase idle without using the stop screw?
is your map sensor connected? does the hose connected to it pull a good vacuum? how did you remove the egr valve? did you remove just the valve? or the whole thing egr valve and housing (the spacer between the mann and Throttle-body where the the valve is bolted to.) in my car i cut a sheet of metal in the shape of the egr valve gasket blocking both air passages and bolted the egr valve back in place.
I removed the smog pump. The lines connected to it. Blocked those lines up. Then I justs blocked the vacuum line coming off the valve by the throttle body... I assume thats the egr valve.. just to get it running right. I'm not even sure if the 86 5.0 has a limp home mode but that's what it does when it is running. I relocated the battery to the trunk and grounded to the chassis in back. So I wonder if it can't get enough power through 40 some year old metal. I'm going to try it with more solid wire connection tomorrow see if that helps. Then I still have to get it out of LHM
the way i was trained to set idle on a efi ford is to clean the throttle body, warm up the motor. turn it off, disconnect the idle air controle motor, start up motor set idle speed at 650rpm. turn off motor and reconnect iac. there should be no limp mode effecting the motors ability to rev up. you are in a situation where you have to make sure the condition of all the sensors, actuators and mechanical componets are operating correctly. is your map sensor hooked up to manifold vacuum?
My map sensor was hooked up. Just a vacuum line that was bad.. just didn't look like it. I had previously relocted my battery to the trunk. Didn't use the correct wires. So after droppin 70 bucks on 2 gage welding wire, It starts right up. Runs great. Scary amounts of power I'm not used to after drivn a little 2.0L escort peicer for a year... Thank You for all the Ideas. The sturgis rally was in town so I was working long hours there Dawn to dusk, then workin on this so I was missing all the simple things you forget about when lack of sleep hits.
