The five speeds in Rangers, which are Mazda built units, do not have removable
bellhousings so it would not work. Your only option is either the SROD or a T5
with a adapter. Personally, I wound up with a overdrive tranny out of a 64 Fairlane
in the back of a 76 Maverick parts car I bought and I'm working on using it.
I wouldn't recomend it though to anyone who does not remember how to work the
old electric overdrive set-ups. Just find a T5 and buy the adapters.

Those 5 speed's in the older Rangers are complete junk. I had an '88 Ranger that had three of those transmissions go out, including one that literally imploded, blowing it's guts out all over the road. We walked a quarter mile down the road picking up parts of the transmission. The driveshaft also got bent and had to be replaced. I wouldn't touch one of those transmissions with a 10 foot stick.
