I need some quick help, guys. I've got a 73 Mav and I need a new transmission. I found a C4 locally that's out of a 66 Mustang at a reasonable price, but everything I'm reading doesn't look like it'll drop in.

Can you guys tell me what I'll need to throw it in my car?

Just read something that says you can swap the pump and input shaft in these.... is it that easy?

for a transmission shop... is the one you have a floor shift style?
it would be better to build the one you have.

Assuming you have column shift, excepting for manual lever it'll work as is... That is if you use the '66 converter... What pre '67 trans don't have is the PRND21 shift pattern, those use a D1 & D2 quadrant that D2 starts in 2nd and shifts to high... Effectively they are a three speed that can mimic a powerglide... Was supposed to aid in limited traction conditions... Ford finally gave up and went with pattern all others were using...

If yo wanted to retain the current 1st, 2nd, drive pattern you'd need a valve body from a '67-'69 trans that do not swap with '70-later versions...

Note this is if you are swapping V8 for V8 trans, V8 to 250 or 200 to 200...

I honestly don't care all that much about shift pattern. As long as I can use park, reverse, and drive I'm happy.

On that note, I've got a B &M z-gate shifter. It should still work for basic shifting operations, right?

Ok, so I looked up the tag on the Trans in its PEE-AC meaning out of a 69. So that solves one mystery.

I'm frustrated, though, because the torque converter he gave me with it is obviously for a 26 spline input shaft. You can hear it rattle in there and the input shaft from my 73 fit right in...

So now I have to find the correct torque converter

Weather the shifter works or not depends on if it came out of a car with Floor shift or column shift! if it is from a column shift car it will have the Shift lever on the tranny facing down and to the front, If it is stick shift it will be up and to the rear! this can be changed but you need to drop the pan and valve body.
