70 maverick steering column problem

    1970 maverick grabber 306 gt40 x heads and cam t-5 5 speed 8.8 rear 17 bullitt wheels also 76 low 22k 2dr undergoing restoration
    I'm currently at a locall show and on the way here I went through the gears and the steering wheel and steering shaft came out about a half inch and the can be slid back and forth does any one know what broke on me this is a early 70 with the key in the dash is it safe to drive home

    Sounds like the upper bearing may have went bad or a snap ring popped off. I would check the flex coupling ( rag joint ) at the steering box and if it is in good condition I can't see where you would have an issue with safety. Make sure your turn signals and brake lights still work as the switch could have been damaged by the play. :)

    Thanks yes the turn signal switch is damaged and won't self cancel but as long as it won't pull out more than it is I'll drive it home

    Not in years the wheel is definetly tight on the shaft it seems to be pulling the whole shaft with it I can see the wiring harness move with it

    Thanks that will be very helpfull, I'm thinking I may have lost the snap ring or the bearing retainer broke

    Sounds like a snap ring to me.

    the rag joint didnt break? sounds like the rag joint broke

    My column was loose at one time, and the guy that fixed it said the bolts behind the turn signal switch worked loose. He tightened them up, and it has been perfect ever since. The symptoms were about the same, but it moved in/out and up/down. Check these, see if it helps. Good luck!

    I have owned this car for 9 years and it was the only time it has done that to me
