You may need a new alternator or there may be a loose wire on it. The same thing happened to my 77' Maverick and the first time it was a bad alternator. We changed it and soon it happened again. Turns out there was a loose connection. From trying to start the car over and over again the battery may need to be charged or possibly replaced depending on how old it is.

Sounds like a chain reaction to me, it does sound like you have a bad alternator but also in the process of cranking it over and over you may have burnt out the Solenoid and/or the Starter. I'd pull the starter and bench test it to make sure it's fine if it works then the solenoid could be bad, like Jean said the battery may also need replacing, even if you are getting power from the battery it may not have enough cranking amps to start the car. When I bought my Mav I had to replace the Battery, Solenoid, and Starter before it would fire right up before that all it did was make a click noise.. Good luck

I had the same problem on my car years ago
In my case, the cause was a faulty voltage regulator, not the alternator. When it stops to work, it don´t charges the battery and the alt lamp start to light. If you continues to drive, the battery takes the task of supplying the coil and the rest of electric circuits of the car. In a bunch of minutes (even a hour) it don´t have the charge to keep the coil sparking, and the motor stops. You may still give another start and keep driving, but soon or later the motor will stops again and will even refuses to start. The click sopund you hear is the start solenoid trying to rev the start motor, but since the battery is low, no rev on the motor.
    Hope it helps
