i interested in change my 9 inch.rear end for a 8.8,the diameter is equal?wath year i use?wath cars?thanks!!
The 9" rear end is stronger than the 8.8 rear end. Why would you want to change to the weaker differential?
Hay Pauls :HandshakeThanks brother!i have a 9 inch,install naow,may be i confused,how many cost a detroit lokers posi for this?and wath you recomend for me,is a5.0 ,fuel injections engines ,trfstage 1 cams,stock motor,c4 trans./4:11 ratio,the motor is out in this moments i install in tow weeks.thanks !!
Just the locker unit itself runs about $400-500 (US) from Summit here on the mainland. I'm sure you'd pay more having it shipped to Puerto Rico. The only 8.8 worht fooling with is one from a 90's Explorer/Mountaineer. Many of these have traction loc units and all have 31 spline axles. And they're dirt cheap here, don't know about P.R. You might want to check out the price of one, then compare costs in adapting it to a Mav vs installing a Detriot Locker in your 9"
My uncle owns GMD Airline/Cargo Services in San Juan. But even with a deal, I bet it'd still be expensive to ship.
Yes the 9 inch is better to go with. Mavericks never came factory with a 9inch. So make sure what you have is not the 8 inch before you order parts. I like the 8 inch. Some people have bad luck with them but I have had great luck with them!!!! They weigh less and are just lil weaker than a 8.8 in stock form and can be built to be a bit stronger than a stock 9 inch. If you are running less than 300 hp at the rear wheels then an 8 inch is fine in most cases and can be built for 425 rwhp(costly though, the same money would build a 9 inch or an 8.8 that would handle 600 plus rwhp). Take some pics of your rear end so we can identify it.....will make this easier as to what direction you should be pointed in..... Lance :Handshake
The 9 inch for rear end is far stronger than the 8.8 inch. It is also easier to work on because it has a removable carier.
Swappin gears and that kind of stuff yes, but an 8.8 is easier to inspect between race days!!!! no pulling axles etc....
Yep! All you do is pull the back cover to inspect - then to change parts you need a spreader bar and to pull the axles etc. There is nothing that makes the 8.8 stronger than the nine inch rear end.
I agree the 9 inch is the best rearend choice for race car builds over all!!!still the 8.8 is a great rearend!!! that can be bult to handle some serious power and in some cases makes a cheap swap with rear disc and a factory posi..... I will have around 1400 to 2k in my 8 inch just depending on what rear brakes I go with I already have the alumin8 center section and pinion support, housing. Gears up in the air and so are the axles width....Prolly gonna use a Detriot locker....or a spool....450hp worthy. My car will have 380to 450 at the rear wheel plus an occasional NAWS run. I plan on road racing more than anything so launching is not as big a stress factor. IF I was gonna drag race only with more than 350rwhp an an auto or 300rwhp I would most likely run a 9 inch!!! Then again I might just run an 8 inch for that .2 to .3 tenths advantage in the 1320.....
For all out racing I like the quick-change rear ends but for "sports" or bracket racing the nine inch is more than strong enough for most applications.
NO doubt quick changes kick arse, but in my case the layout of my suspension limited me. I am building a 3 link w a watts linkage with coil overs.....
