Is $35 a good price for this 8" rebuild kit ? Is there anything that is missing? It looks complete to me.
The only thing missing is the 3.80 or 4.11 gears Looks good, and decent price. Some people skip the gasket and go straight silicone, I would get the gasket AND silicone. This is a really fun and interesting job, if you have not done it before. GET A BOOK!!! It really is not easy without some serious tools. Go ahead and get new axle bearings while you have it all apart. And a MINI SPOOL!!! :evilsmile
Now that I look at it again, those might BE axle bearings??? The ones not in the plastic wrap. It has been a couple of years since I did mine, but they look just like that.
Those are carrier bearings and pinion bearins. 2 on each. Looks like a great price as long as the bearings are good quality. I disagree. I've set many rears (8", 9", and 8.8") with out any special tools.
Quit bragging ...most garage greasemonkeys don't have a dial indicator, which pretty much puts this job into the "not easy without some serious tools" category. Also, I never did get that pinion nut down to 150 ft/lbs (or whatever it was supposed to be) with the tools I have. Because of that, I get a little bit of hum when I decelerate... Oh well, works pretty well considering what tools I had and how inexpensive the job was for me. (I used the old bearing races and big sockets with a 5lb sledge hammer as the "press" to get all the bearings into place )
I have one but never used it. I just adjust untill I can just detect backlash. Always ends uo in the 5-8 thousands range.
I wish I was that good.....i'm still pulling out my depth mics., inch lb. torque wrench, and dial indicator to set one up.
