Headlights on highbeam, Megadeth playing in the CD player(first album), Comet running 50mph, heat on high(dash vents) and fan on fastest setting...ALT light is dimly lit. OMG.

Turn off the radio and it stays dimly lit, turn down the fan and it goes off. *sigh* not enough juice!

I'm just sayin'. I wish I would have sprung for the 100amp alternator over the 65 amp one out of a 1979 Chevy van.
Lessons learned my friends, lessons learned.

If the alternator wasnt producing enough power wouldnt the headlights had brightened/dimmed when you turned on/off the heater? Or did they?

Thanks for sharing the lesson, I know itll help me (y)

I bet it is more a wiring / ground issue over alternator amperage.

Fan motors draw a lot of juice. Being 30+ years old, it's probably got a lot of wear on it ,too. For now, use the Hee Haw cure....."Don't do that!" [ run it on high] Probably be fine on low or medium.

did you replace the power line from the alt to the batt? the old one is probably a little coroded adding resistance and was made for our stock alt so it may be a little small...

New power line from the alt to the battery for sure. The alt I'm using is 63 amps from a Chevy van.
