Just got a 74 Maverick and noticed some parts, such as alternator and heater core, vary from cars with and cars without A/C. My question is I was told by the previous owner that the A/C on this car was an add-on system, not a factory setup. There is an extra rocker switch under the steering column that switches from heat to cool. Is this factory? The guy who told me was just a kid when this car was purchased and I'm not sure if he remembers correctly. Can someone tell me how to identify between the factory setup and this "possible" add-on?

I know my answer is hiding somewhere on that page! HAHA But the more I stare at those diagrams the more confused I get...

Here's what I can tell so far....
.....my alternator has only one belt/pulley on it
.....there is a rocker switch labeled "heat" and "cool" under the steering column
.....a small twisty knob under the dash near the center of car
.....two fat rubber hoses coming off the top of what appears to be an A/C compressor located at about the 10 o'clock position of the motor.

None of the pics seem to show the entire setup I have. I'm still confused ...

Nothing about that appears factory. Possibly a dealer install?

Isn't the compressor supposed to be on the other side of the motor?

That is an aftermarket system...not factory. I don't see any of the interior components, like the evaporator or a box for it, etc....so I would say that part is missing.

That is where it goes on ALL 6 cylinder cars.

Ok thanks guys. Sounds like he was right after all. He told me his dad had it installed after he bought it, and y'all seem to support that. That means that when I go to buy things like alternator and heater core, I should select parts for a non A/C car, right?

I would trace the compressor lines and see where they go inside the car. Maybe they used a factor condenser/airbox?

That looks aftermarket, I had Sears unit installed in mine (I believe back in 1972) and it looks familure. 99.99 that's not factory. Looks like the underdash unit is missing also. This was taken shortly after I bought the car, the compressor looks like yours.

You probably will have to have fan belts measured for that car, as the alternator has been moved in order to get the AC compressor on there.

The heater core would be a non-ac heater core.

Well the A/C doesn't work, and the heater core has been bypassed by the previous owner because it leaks. How hard would it be to do away with the system all together and return everything to factory original? Including putting my alternator back where it belongs.
