Any suggestions on how to get the adhesive off my roof after removing the vinyl top? I have tried mineral spirits and Xylene, with minimal results (just removed the fuzz from the bottom of the vinyl top). 3M general adhesive remover and 92 octane gas (as last resort and adequate ventilation!!!) with moderate results (removed the fuzz and 1/2 the glue). Still have a thin layer before I get to the original paint. Would like to do as little damage to the paint as possible, but not completely against repriming/painting the top if I need to.

There's a product called Hi-Solv that's put out by the Crest company. It's used in body shops as a prep to remove any oils or foreign substances before painting. I've used it for years to remove tar, wax, and adhesives. It won't harm the paint. You won't find it in your auto parts store, as it's not generally sold to the public but a good paint store should carry it. If that fails, check with the parts guy at your local car dealership and I'll bet he'll sell you a can. Used car departments love it. Hope this helps and good luck!

    never mind

After spending about $60 on 4 different "heavy duty" strippers, and having one donated from a body shop, I decided to strip the paint and primer in order to remove the adhesive. I would strongly recommend that anyone thinking of removing a vinyl top SERIOUSLY consider how much work is involved in this seemingly simple job.

I agree. I removed the vinyl top on my 4 door and it is a job. I found a LOT of pitting on the roof that was because Ford didn't finish the roof as the car was tagged to have a vinyl top. It definately wasn't due to rust because there wasn't any. I have to entirely refinish the roof before painting and it is a job and a half.:slap:

Personally, I kinda like the looks of vinyl roofs. Probably not enough to put one on mine, but enough to not take it off if it had it (for a street car).

    To each his/her own, though.
