1970 without a title......owner has current registration registered on his name......how can i legally change ownership of the car....i have the vin.....is there anywhere we can run the vin to check if its stolen or something??
Title procurement is different in every state and some don't even require a title on older vehicles... If the vehicle is from out of state that didn't use a title, usually a registration from prev owner and bill of sale is generally required... Assuming your state does have title, the former owner should be able to apply for a duplicate and sign it over to you... The prev owner of my Comet went through all sorts of Hell getting a title, was sold from AL(no title), but was last registered in MS that do have title... Even with a bill of sale, VA said nope we need a title, he finally went through a title agency to get it straightened out...
In Pennsylvania, the previous owner would need to apply for a replacement title - then it could be transferred to you in the normal fashion but as Krazy Comet said, it depends on what state you live in
Why do so many newbies leave their profile location blank - it really does help with questions like this to know where you are from ............. Wisconsin will not accept titles from those internet title replacement companies. As others have said, go to your DMV. Best to call your states capitol offices and ask what you need to do. Wisconsin has a person in Madison that does nothing but work on cases like this. It was pretty easy to do but did require a bond in the value of the car and the police had to inspect the car to make sure the VIN was clean and not tampered with.
Might be part of the next upgrade to the forum software - but it still wouldn't do any good - because we would get answers like "planet earth" or "sitting on my couch"
