I have a 74 Comet, 250, C4 I was not going to do this conversion but I have the inetrior out and will be under the car changing fuel and brake lines anyway so figured this would be an ideal time. This goes along with my where does it end post a week ago. I keep adding more stuff to do and this thing will never be done. which brings me to my question. Going from column shift to floor shift it seems an aftermarket cable shifter is the easiest route to take. It will be a street only car for my teenage son so operation like a factory floor shift is fine. No need for ratchet shifting, full manual shifting etc. Reverse lock out and reverse lights are a must. What shifter do you recommend and what other tidbits of knowledge can you give me to help with this? Any parts not included with the shifter I will need? What problems might I encounter? Thanks in advance Dave
i just bought one of these. i havent even opened it yet so i cant tell you about the quality http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BMM%2D80775&N=700+115&autoview=sku i wanted a cable shifter because they are easy too hook up but i also wanted something "old school" looking with the boot on the floor. i think those shifters with the box under them are pretty ugly...
i dont know either. the shifter i got tho was listed to work on both and had all the brackets needed for a C4 so hopefully i'll be good
I like that shifter also. Did it come with the boot? Hurry, open it up and tell me about the quality ! Thanks for your input. Dave
Summit says it comes with the boot. I really want to install something like this too, but not until I get the pieces together to completely get rid of all signs of the column shifter. ...And then... Headers.
How do you plan to operate your reverse/back up lights? Doesn't come with a back up switch and I didn't see one available for it.
these shifters are on 6-8 month back order from B&M so if you want one get it now. i'll get some pics up later today
B & M actually has a pretty informative website. You can view the installation instructions on the shifter your interested in. I got the Hammer shifter and it looks damn good with the black carpet. It came with with the reverse switch and neutral safety switches. Here is a link to B&M http://www.bmracing.com/index.php?id=products&sid=4&cat=2&subcat=1&pid=14 then go down to installation instructions
Ideal as a column shifter replacement. Includes neutral safety switch & black T-Handle. Backup light not available with this model. Includes 5' cable, hardware, boot & plate. buy now
Look around for one that you like and has what you need. I got the Hammer shifter, it has both switches.
clearence is definatly tight on this one. the biggest issue was the balencer on the drive shaft so i had to move the shifter foward and to the left to clear the trans its self. im going to need a smaller boot. the one that it comes with hangs over the edge of the trans tunnel
yea, but most of the lokar ones i seen were over $300 if your drive shaft doesnt have that big round balancer then this would be a great shifter but some of you guys with later model mavs like myself might want to keep shopping
I think you could find another yoke without the balancer, my 73 doesn't have it, and my 74 does, and the drive shafts are exactly the same otherwise. Most of those one's I've had the rubber looks pretty dry, and you wouldn't want it flying off on you.
