Yup another one of those questions , iv been doin alot of researchin and lookin in past databases to find an answer before commin here, and not turning up much.
Project: 77' 302 column shift, auto, power steering maverick.

Been seeing mixed results as in what to use, not to use, methods of getting them in, i guess it just varies on personal preference.
-Been seeing that the Hedman headers are the choice to use?
    models #88-300 and #88-400?
Hear these headers fit as long as you have a floor shift, and not a column auto or manual?
-Get a different idler arm? or is that for the earlier mavs
-The power cylinder will need to be relocated a couple inches down?
-Have to lift the engine out a bit to fit the headers in?

Basically lookin for a lil bit of a more concrete answer and method for going about this on this type of vehicle, all info is greatly appreciated :) thanks

I used the 88300 Hedman hedders on my 70 about 5 years ago. They can only be used with an automatic trans and it MUST be a floor shift!

I converted my car to a floor shift when I did the V8 swap so it was no big deal for me to use this hedder. I also have manual steering, so that was no problem either.

As for getting the hedder in...I did NOT have to raise the engine at all. Instead, I jacked up the front of the car and wiggled the hedders in from under the engine comparment. If you go this route, be sure you have jack stands and other safety equipment so that the car does not fall on you because the front will have to be raised pretty high. My situation could have been as easy as it was because I didn't have P/S, so if you have P/S things may be different.

I like the 88300 because it is of good quality, fits very well and is cheap to buy!

    Good luck.

i just put headers on my 71. went with the hooker 6901. NOBODY makes headers for the mav that will fit with a column shift. i too looked forever. i had to move the auto shifter to the floor. i think it looks better now anyway.

Ok, so where do I find these headers? I need a set for a car WITH power steering and auto trans. I will be putting in a floor shifter in anyways, so that doesn't matter. Where do I find this bracket to lower the p/s pump?

Go with Hooker 6901s. Summit or Jegs is 2 sources. The drop down bracket is for power steering cyl. also available where ever you buy headers. Go to bottom of this page and research other posts for more info ...

They fit, the the collector on the pass. side exits directly at the firewall and if memory serves me right so does the driver's side. You can heat/bend the collectors downward some, but to me, it's kind of a waste considering the 88300 long tubes are a better choice. They really aren't THAT hard to install.

I thought that column shift was a problem with
most amy headers for these cars?

My Hooker 6901's fit fine with floor shift A/T.

Country Mav (Preston) did this a while back.....used headers with Column shift....it CAN be done....just had to modify the shifter linkage (I believe) I will try to find it in the archives or I will get Preston to help us out with this.....I am going to dothis same swap this summer.....headers and column shift....I will put together all the tech stuff while I am doing....never say never....just have to figure out how.

i bought the summit racing headers when i was getting all my parts together to do the 302 swap...........when we put the engine in we decided to drop in headers to be sure they fit....they did not.....i had to take the brand new scratched up headers to a local speed shop and they actualyl gave me 80% what i paid for them and then i bought the Hooker headers..... they dropped straight in while the engine was unbolted from the motor mounts........and they fit lovely.....the only problem i have is the drivers side hangs lower than that passenger side and if i go over a speed bump to fast it will scrap on the collector....i am sure you can heat up the tubes and bend them up if needed....but im not the worried about it...i would rather have the headers drag a little than my nice aluminum deep tranny pan.. :)

    You have the 6901 Hookers?
I just looked at a pic of mine from underneath.
If one side does hang lower, it is not much.

    Never noticed it before.

Well, I installed the Hedman shorties last night and they fell right in. I didn't even have to touch the motor mounts. While it it a tight fit for the pipes after the collector, it can be done. The passenger side does point at the firewall but it's not that close and the "ball" at the end of the header allows for flexiblity on the downpipe. It clears pretty well. Now, the drivers side is a slightly different story. The collector points RIGHT AT the pittman arm when the steering is all the way to the left. But, with a small dent and a slight bend, it clears.
I got the shorties because I don't really like to have that "octopus" hanging down on each side of the engine and have never had really good luck with the clearance they provide. I'm not drag racing, so I don't need to squeeze every extra horse out.
