I'm running a Victor Junior on the 5.0 and haven't found an air cleaner that I can close the hood on. 14" drop base interferes with the distributor. 10" clears the distributor but is too tall, and I'm concerned about how it will flow. I've got an Edelbrock Pro-Flow triangular now. The hood closes, but is tight down on the air cleaner and looks like it will restrict flow. I know a hood scoop is warranted but I don't want to cut the factory hood and can't afford a fiberglass hood. Any ideas?
You are right Rob,it`s funny, how many times have you seen a guy with a very restrictive air cleaner & a powerful eng. & he does`nt understand why it will not perform.I am not sure about your area, but over here in Late Model Stock circle track all you can run is a 350cfm holley 2 barrel. You know better than I because of the amount of time you have spent around circle track, that carb. will do more to police that class than probably anything else nascar could have come up with.
I know we have tighter engine quarters in these cars.. and no offense to anyone who actually likes those foam filters.. but they leave something to be desired for an air filter. They will cost you power even on more moderately powered(airflow) motors. The last one I used(not too long after they came out) was actually sucking/caving in around the lack of inner wire bracing. You could even see it sucking in while revving the motor at the carb linkage. And to make matters worse, after a bit of racing around I found that the filter started holding that sucked in shape and even had dirt tracking in several places where the filter media was allowing the unfiltered air to sneak by. And the 1000 cfm rating is just as much a joke as that $79 buck 1,000 watt amplifier at walmart is. Got rid of it and put a 3" x 14" K&N filter setup which then allowed me to jet up the carb with all the newfound airflow I never even knew I was missing. Foam is for lawn equipment or pre-filters for off-road racing. Lesson learned.
Down the strip I agree. However, in the pits there is a lot of dirt and sand blowing around. I don't want it in the engine.
I have no doubt. I usually try to be 5 steps ahead with this kinda stuff but still not sure what I'll be able to run on mine . Hoping once the motor is down and back a tad it may free up some additional room. I always prefer the bigger caps, especially with the higher base timing I like to run, but now thinking that a low profile disty may be the minimum needed to help matters a bit more there. The above mention was basically only in reference to the poor flow capability of foam compared to the more conventional filtration media. Glad you got it sorted out and look forward to seeing your finished product on the track.
I agree, a 14x3 is the ideal. Right now I will run the Proflow foam until I go to a fiberglass hood with scoop. I cut the hood to run a low profile scoop off of a 2006 Mustang. It was painted last night and I should get it installed today. By the way I fired it up. Haven't driven it yet.
I ran a Vic Jr with a 1" carb spacer and a 1.5" drop base and cleared with no issues using a 14 x 3 K&N filter and Extreme top.
Anything less then 3" above the carb is hurting you. Another option would be remove the Vic Jr for a smaller intake to create velocity but I think the best option is a 4" Cowl induction hood. Think about the whole package.
Along with the 14x2 inch it has a k &n top on it . I don't see how that's hurting that much? I would think It should breath just fine ID much rather have that then having to go with a cowl hood.
