As I've not had a functioning AC in my 8 years as a Comet owner, I must ask a stupid question.
Does the compressor cut off on these cars when it hits a certain temp/pressure, or does it pretty much just stay on while the AC is running?
I think it cycles, my dad and grandpaw say otherwise...
It cools, I'm just not quite sure if it has enough 134a, pressures are 26-30 low side, 260-280 high.
we all think it could use a bit more freon, but I've got to replace the clutch bearing before I go any further.

I'm thinking these cars don't cycle, but I haven't seen my original AC system for years. Most new systems cycle at idle and/or low fan settings.

Your high side is too high, your low side is too low. Do you have an electric fan? Your condensor probably isn't doing it's job, a good fan & shroud (for the condensor too!) will help.

Yes. the AC compressors do cycle on and off. There is a thermostatic switch in the evaporator housing that opens the circuit when the temp on the fins becomes around 34 degree's. Also, if you just put in the 134A without the proper mods to the sytem, it just won't work very well. 134A requires a lot higher pressure and a better condenser than these cars came with. The old two cylinder compressors (especially if they have age on them) just don't do a very good job. There just isn't a cheap way to convert these. If you want it to cool you have got to spend more and do more than just put in one of the auto parts store conversion kits that sell for 34.95. I would try to find a friend with the license to buy the R12 or go to the EPA web site and take the test and get one yourself, and then go back to R12. Go to aircondition.com for more info, it's a terriffic web site. Sorry there is no simple answer.

aiight, thanks for the info guys.
134a aint the best option, but it works and its cheap.
I have access to some R12, if 134 doesn't work out...
