Cleaned out the car this week and realized I have no title! Been pulled over several times here recently and realized what I thought I was handing off as a title was just another tag registration. None of the cops have mentioned... "Hey dim-wit, this aint a title"

So.... I looked up Alabama law and pre mid 70s doesn't need a title right? And to prove proof of ownership, just use multiple tag reciepts, correct?

*should* I have a title? I called my grandfather up (original owner) and he wasn't sure of the car ever had a title. Does this sound right?

Anyone know If I can get a title?

Figured I post here before waiting in the court house lines. :Handshake

Yep... Pre-'74 cars in Alabama don't have titles. My car came from Alabama, it never had a title, and getting it registered here in TN was a huge PITA.

He'd be correct! Pre-75 cars do not have titles. Thats why none of the cops said anything. All you need is the Bill of Sale and the registration. I lived in Alabama and actually brought my 71 LeMans to Alabama with a FL title and they were like "what is this you dont need this." OK. But when I sold the car to a guy in Louisana, he had to have the previous title from FL which was a huge PITA as mentioned above.

So when I move to AL, will they try to take all my titles? Will they issue titles if I have one?

They wont take the titles you just wont use them. I saved mine from that 71 Pontiac because you may need it if you ever sale a car to someone in another state. They wont issue you a title either. You get just the registration and your tag thats it!

GA dosen't require titles for older cars either (anything pre-'85), but they will issue you a title if the car came with one. I have the title in my name for my '74 Grabber and '75 Fiat 124 Spider.

I can't say I've ever heard of a cop asking to see a car's title when pulling someone over, though... :hmmm: I'd venture to say that most people don't keep the title to a car actually IN the car.

Correct. Titles are not used on anything from 1974 back in Alabama, and they don't require you to show one when you tag it, even if you have one from another state. They don't keep them, either. They're not any good as far as Alabama is concerned, but like ModMav71 said, I'd hang on to them just in case you sell it to someone in a state that requires it.

    Happened a couple times.

Usually late at night. Sir, let me see your ID, registration, proof of ownership, stick of gum, spare change, first born...

    Obviously fishing for DUIs. :cussing:

Nope, wrong side of the state. I'm on the west side, close to Mississippi, just north of Tuscaloosa, Dadeville is on the east side, close to Georgia.
