    Hi guys

    I'm looking at buying a 7" pivot 3g 95 amp alternator

    http://www.rjminjectiontech.com/collections/alternators/products/alt-7749

and wondering how to interface it with my stock 74 302. I've seen the charts and graphs and stuff but unfortunately I don't really get it. The guy sells some cables and wiring on his site.

    Like this cable,

    http://www.rjminjectiontech.com/collections/alternator-accessories/products/3g-alternator-harness

is that something I need to buy with it to hook it up?

He doesn't sell a single belt pulley, but I think I can just take that off my current alternator correct?

    Any help much appreciated.

I did something similar, but I swapped in a serpentine belt setup from a mustang so that it would snap right in. Did not require special cables, just a single large hot wire to the battery. And you can throw away all those voltage regulator wires.

Well the alt doesn't come with a pulley on it, seems it would be a lot easier to change 1 pulley than 3 or 4?

Also, seems I don't have that chart saved anywhere anymore, can someone link it for me again?

I did this after I did the single groove pulley, because every time I hit 6500 rpms, it would toss the belt.

I don't remember where I bought this setup, but it was cheap. And works WAY better than the single groove belt.

Also, I am now getting 130 Amps from this alternator. I don't need all those amps yet, but when I get my stereo installed, I just might.

Otherwise, just hope, wish, and pray that it lines up correctly. If it doesn't, prepare to spend many hours shimming and bending brackets to make it line up.

As for the wiring, I have no idea what that harness does. So I am no help whatsoever.

Good points on the belt. I'd hate to throw off my belt. I'll order some pulley shims from the guy at the same time as I buy the alternator just in case.

That harness goes from the regulator on the alt and hooks up to the idiot light, or a voltage meter, and has the F and S connectors on it I believe.

I guess I just need to get the alt get the chart and slap crap together in my car until it works again.

Sorry I am the only one posting here, and mostly non-informative posts...

But, I don't see how that harness will fix you up. I think it is for later model cars.

The stock 74 wiring had 3 or 4 wires, and no plug for you to just snap that in to. IF that harness even works, you would have to cut wires, determine which goes where, and that kind of thing.

You can go to O'Reilly or NAPA and order a GM alternator that has only one wire, and bypass all that other crap. For about $60 you can slap in an alternator, that almost just bolts right in (you will need to put in a spacer that is about 4" long), no other wires. Lose all the external voltage regulator stuff.

Here is my previous GM 1-wire installed. I used a socket, drilled out and cut down to fit as a spacer.

(FYI--drilling and cutting a socket, which is hardened steel, is a major hassle! Use a piece of copper tubing or galvanized pipe instead!).

I bought mine brand new from a local supplier, for $99, no core, for a 1993 5.0L Mustang, and wired like the diagram everyone posts.

Red one is the "1-wire", the black wire is my starter wire.

This has all been rewired since.
