New member here.My '73 c-4 does not shift into drive .I changed filter and mod. valve but that did not help.Has good vac. to valve. The downshift lever from carb. is not hooked up,could that be problem?I want to try every poss. fix before I rebuild/replace.Car has an old style Edelbrock 289 intake that has the carb. sitting at slight angle and I have not been able to hook up rod yet.Has any one ever seen this intake before?Comments? It may be in the valve body but I am not sure what to look for.Would a crimp in cooler line cause no up-shift?1-2 shift seems fine and no slipping.
This is not an absolute, but that downshift lever to the carb can make a transmission shift improperly. Before I put mine back on it would not hit high gear until around 70 mph, and around 49 mph it would downshift. Try that first. If you have swapped to a 4V or changed carbs from your original setup that assumedly worked, you may need to lengthen the downshift lever at the carb. Summit sells an extender. Seth
Seth, it sounds like your problem was the kickdown lever on the tranny was stuck in the down position. When mine was not hooked up it would shift into 3rd early and never downshift from 3rd no matter how hard I stomped it.
I will try the spring.Sounds like something I can aford.Has anyone ever seen one of those old style Edelbrock 4bl intakes? Says 289 performer.Has Holly carb,do not know mod.# but it sits at an angle front of carb. to the left.I do not see any way to hook lever w/out putting into a bind.May be time for an upgrade.
I had a performer 289 before, but it wasnt angled. I remember the Torkers being angled though. I dunno. I guess that would make linkages a little funny though huh? Let us know what you figure out if anything. AC
Those manifolds were probably more adaptable to manual shift transmissions. If the spring deal does not cure your problem then the valve body must be removed and looked at. Could be a stuck 2 to 3 shift valve or various other things. Can change fluid and filter while you at it.
Yea, those manifolds are torkers. Not a bad manifold for the street. I have a Weiand Xcellerator that im running and its close to the Torkers but the carb sits straight on it.
Your right it is a Torker I still not sure if kickdown rod can be hooked up to carb.Runs great tho.A cable setup would be nice.Anyway, still have to tear into trans to see why no upshift to 3rd.Thanks
FoMoDave....about that non-shifting transmission; you said you changed the modulator, how about the little rod that goes inside between the modulator and the valve inside the trans? It didn't by chance fall out, did it? Had a C4 do exactly as you say and the little rod was either wrong or too long (can't remember). Wouldn't shift to save my life. Also when it was in manual low, it did not have any engine braking...when I accelerated then let off, it was like the trans was in neutral. Reason being, the low band was not holding and it would freewheel because the one-way sprag was not held in conjunction with the band. Just thinking out loud. Oh, on the Torker manifold. Good manifold, just old technology. I had one on my Mustang for a while. Pulled well from idle to 5000 where the cam signed off (and heads too probably). Built another motor, this time with a "little" more cam (still mild though) and lightweight everything and with a Vicor Jr, but the lack of bottom end torque got old and I just put a plain-old RPM on it. Much better for street driving, but still makes excellent power to 6200..which is where the valves start to go into float (hyd. roller). Besides that, I RARELY run it that hard, especially on the street. Things start going by real fast and ya never know when someone's gonna pull out in front of ya. Now that I've broken not one but two 7.5" rear ends, it's time to upgrade to something better. Them things are junk with a capital J for a Mustang with a 5 speed.
dave (ol guy) once again... you are it!!!!!!!!lately my mav has been shifting at way too high enginerpm... no matter how easy i am with the gas....new vacuum modulator helped but today at work, i shoves the kickdown linkage towards the carb and sure enough... it has some left to move. i'll put a spring on it in a day or two but that was it! the car would downshift on a heartbeat... slipping like crazy until i gave it some pedal. now it runs like it should. i love this board.!!!!!
Thanks mavman.I will pull mod. back off and check that out.I do not recall if that rod was there. When I first got car and changed fl. and filter the fl. looked good and pan was clean.I should have known to chek that rod,got in a hurry. If that is not it I will check servo, gov.,valve body.Does anyone know which mod.valve is best- single vac. or duel vac.? I put on a single vac. running off intake.I like to keep things simple.
