The 302 was the original Z/28 engine. (I am ashamed of myself for knowing that.)

No shame in knowing that Jack :) It was the engine to have if you did not have a big block.

Basically a stroker motor with 283 crank with 327 piston bore, 11:0.1 compression, big solid lifter camshaft, big valve heads, 780 Holley 290 hp@4,800 rpm with 310 ft pds of torque @3,200 rpms. It was created to stay under the 5.0 ci rating to compete in SCCA racing

No shame at all for sure. In my book.. a good motor, is a good motor.. no matter who makes it.

290 HP my ass! Try more like 370+HP. I've ridden in and raced against those rev happy little motors and they are the main reason that Ford put Cleveland heads on our little 302's in the first place. Without those heads.. we would've never even had a chance against em'.

302 Chevy makes our little 2 barrel air starved ford 302 look pathetic. I drove a Z28 with a 302 4 speed way back. Awesome engine. Loves RPM.
