Well folks, it's time for my 1971 Comet 4-door to be put out to pasture. I'm going to be driving it into the garage and tearing off the useful parts over the next couple of weeks. The plan is to salvage the engine, tranny, rear end, select suspension components, select dash components, radiator, and headlights. The rest of the car is going to be dropped at a metal recycler. A few questions for you gentlemen. Do you guys know if the door hinges on 4-doors are the same as 2-doors? How about windshield and rear window? Pretty sure door windows are different.
Salvage the Arm Rests of the REAR doors also .. I believe they will fit the FRONT of some 2 Doors . Usually , they are in much better condition than the fronts anyway. Use a 3/8ths NUT DRIVER .. not a socket .. Usually they pull off the extension when trying to remove the socket from the fastener. ( Ask me how I know this .. : ) Cometized Chip
The interior is totally stripped except for some of the dash, so there isn't much to save there unfortunately.
Front bumper is there but it looks like it's had a pretty good impact that destroyed the grill and bent the hood and bumper.
Still a high demand piece, a good chrome shop can make it new again. You should have no problem finding a buyer for it.
Here are a few pictures to give you guys an idea of what shape the hood and bumper are in. The PO must have rear-ended somebody with some decent speed as it crinkled the bumper and hood up pretty good. It might be possible to straighten the bumper and hood, but it certainly wouldn't be easy and it may not turn well at all.
Well grandma's grocery getter/the rat comet took one on the chin today. Cleared the garage out, pulled it in, and started tearing parts off of it. Definitely some interesting craftsmanship....wood screws in the dash, sway bar connection ripped out of frame rail, battery ground routed to dash bolt. Won't be long before this puppy is sliced, diced, and on my trailer on the way to the crusher.
Got all of the front suspension off. Compressing coil springs is always a little scary, got it done without losing any body parts, which is always a good thing. Going to pull the engine, tranny, and rear end this weekend. I did find a few scary things, rear U-joints were in about the worst shape I've ever seen and getting ready to come apart and front control arm bolts to the shock towers were loose.
