i went to a junk yard this weekend and found some parts that might work for my 75 maverick. i have been looking for power steering parts and i am wondering if there is any reason i should not update my Power steering pump to the next generation of pump? early 80's pump. larger fill spout with a plastic cap.
that pump should work. the fittings on it are metric so you will have to get creative with the power stearing lines. also those pumps have a tendancy to be noisy. i find that if you keep the fluid fresh and clean they will be quieter.
I had a 1980 Cougar (think small, square 1980 T-Bird)... if it is the half plastic/half metal pump ... run away ... bad leakers when they were new. I went through a couple, lasted less than 10K miles. Sold that car before too long ... wasn't a very good car at all ... it is like all the engineering was at an awkward point then.
I have one on my car with All of the 88 fox drive belt sys. a little noisey but liveable . As Bryant said you will need to fab up a hose. Jay
i belive that the actual pressure is controled by the controle valve on the center link. sure the max pressure capasity of the pump is important but never gets reached untill you hold the stearing against the locks. by the way this is a good way to cause leaks in your system or blow a power stearing hose. never hold power stearing against the locks.
yeah I am running one of those two pumps too, you only need to have one line made and that is going from the split to the pump, I think mine cost me about $25 bucks to have it made, I just took the junkyard fitting in off of the power steering pump and my old power steering line and told them which end I needed to keep and how long I wanted it and they made me up a new lines with new fittings on both end for about the same price as I would have to buy and original replacement from autozone.
i live in a town that produces tractors as a main sorce of inforrstructure. everybody makes high pressure and hydrolic lines here. it is hard to find a place that dosent make theme here. i think the grocery store makes hydrolic lines in this town :16suspect i dont think getting the lines will be an issue thank you everyone
