In my search for the correct chrome trim to put a viny top on (I did end up getting an NOS set) the description in the Ford parts book indicated that the trim was used on both Vinyl top cars and two-tone cars. Has anyone ever seen a two-tone car from the factory that that had the roof painted to look like a vinyl top? I'm seriously thinking about painting my roof black instead of vinyl since it will be much simpler ...
dan, if you have the "bedliner" sprayed on it will have the same "texured" look. check with ...waynesford...he could give you some help with that part....frank...
one thing i forgot when you were asking about going to vinyl. when i had my other mav, i considered painting or replacing. then i saw my neighbors newer caddy, the new cloth tops with padding did look reallly classy. I probably would have had something similar to that. JMO
I have seen one, I think it was actually a 73 grabber, orange and black if I remember correctly, looked pretty good if you're into that sort of thing
Dan, back in 1986 my wife had a 6 cyl Maverick(`72) that still had the Factory bright red (#3)paint and the car had the vinyl top trim but the top was painted white. I don`t know for a fact that the car came that way ,or if it had a vinyl top removed and the top painted. I always suspected it came that way.
DM, is putting on the vinyl top gonna be that hard? I was thinking about doing it on my race car to make painting easier...lol
I think the hardest part is gonna be removing all the chrome trim and trim clips and then putting all the clips and chrome trim back on ... Supposedly the Mustang Restoration books have a section on installing vinyl tops so I have to go to Barnes and Noble and check on out .. I had also thought about using the $99 herculiner roll-on bedliner kit to reproduce the top and they also sell a UV protectant for it that makes it glossy.
Doesn't the Stallion have a painted roof? Of course the whole top part of the car is painted on the Stallion. Roz
I put one on my four dr. I did all the prep work then had the pro's actually put the vinyl top on my car when they put the headliner in since all the windows were out already. It didn't cost me a ridiculous amount to get it done either.
My 72 Grabber came from the factory with a white painted top. When i bought it the whole car was painted red but it had the chrome on the sides. I done some checking i found it was a red grabber with white top, black stripes and black interior. ray
A "Bed Liner" top better come out darn good because it will be a female dog to change if you don't like it.
Our neighbor growing up had a white '69-'72 Maverick-std. 6cyl. car. It was white with red pinstripes, red interior and a painted red roof. The guy with the metallic copper/brown Maverick with white top from the last Roundup-was that vinyl or painted? I have a pic, but can't remember if it was paint or vinyl. Seth
