I need a distributor for my project and is seriously considering buying a point setup. Wish i had not threw them away years ago.

I've ran on 70 mustang in late 80s and early 90s with very good results. Kept a few spare and change when needed.

On mustang I've upgraded to accel dual points to duraspark to currently a MSD distributor and MSD box.
    On my 79 F250 I have HEI.
On my 77 F100 I have duraspark with MSD box.

I've had trouble at one time or another with them all. The points have always been the easiest and least expensive to troubleshoot and replace. Never remembered being left high and dry on road with those point.

Anyone out there still running point with good results? Or bad?

Been running DSII ten years, only thing I discovered; I need to clean the buildup on contact tips inside dizzy every few thousand miles. As long as I keep up w/ that --- cars works/run fine. Ran dual points back in the day, have no issues w/ them. Probably no more maintance than I have w/ my setup. Might have to go on Ebay to find dual point setup.

I still have points on my 200. Just replaced them and the condenser actually. I think I need a rebuild on mine though due to slack in the shaft.

The 71 Maverick 170 in my '63 Falcon still has it's original Points ignition sparking along fine . I will replace the points IF or WHEN they ever crap out, but I don't think I'd ever install a points system when DSII's are easily available.

Along with original coil, the '69 Fairlane still has points, starts fine plus idles & drives cold without issues. In other words I'm hard pressed to find fault. It does have fairly fresh plugs & wires with maybe 2K mi. Because car has full length headers & dual exhaust, I recently rebuilt a Autolite 2bbl carb for a 429, extra CFM picked up a slight amount of HP.

That said, a electronic a electronic ign usually improves cold drivability, though with just the Pertronix I never saw any great difference on my 428CJ . What improved it was wiring the Pertronix to trigger a Crane Hi-6(similar to MSD), gave noticable difference, especially starting & cold. Of course the 428 is a moderate performance engine with large carb, tends to load up when cold, hotter spark is welcome. With points it'd start to misfire once tuneup got maybe 5K miles, it's last set of plugs now has probably 7-8K, no evidence of misfire. In addition to the Crane box, has a MSD Blaster coil & Pertronix Flame Thrower plug wires.

The Comet has heads without heat riser, reguardless of ignition, it runs like crap when below 50*.

WoW!! Points reviews have been mostly positive.

Just what i wanted to hear.

I'll more than like do points with option to go pertronix if and only if necessary.

This is a little off topic but difference is there in the distributor between the 200 and 250

Give me a couple days, I think that I’ve got a small block dual point distributor in the attic that I’d make you a deal on.

You stated you're running an autolite 2 barrel carb on your 429 an you picked up cfm and hp.

What carb did you have on 429 prior?

I have 750 speed demon on my 429. Runs great but gets s whopping 9 mpg.

What mpg you getting with your 2 barrel?

Oops, guess I skrewed that up.:90:

I installed a 429 2bbl carb in place of orig on the 302 in Fairlane. The 302 carb is rated at 287 CFM(has 1.08 venturi size cast on side) while the 429 carb is 356 CFM(1.23 casting). Because it already has full length headers, I wanted to see if it'd benefit form additional air flow. Could have tossed a Weiand & Holley 600 on it but have a 347 in the plans for next year.

No doubt the 356 CFM carb badly chokes a 429, but was available in full size '69-'71. When I got it was stripped of everything other than top cover and boosters. A friend gave it to me, along with probably half dozen partial rebuild kits. By robbing choke assembly & parts from other carbs, I managed to come up with enough pieces for the rebuild.

Basically the 302 is still a turd. I may play with the tune a little, but other than maybe timing, is spot on. It idles 20" vac but I dunno exactly how the mechanical curve is calibrated.
