hi, i am trying to get the trans on the engine. i can rotate the engine by hand when the trans is off. as soon as i bolt up the trans i can't rotate the engine anymore.

the engine, trans combo is correct, it was a matching set when i purchased them.

when you install the torque converter into the trans and try to spin the converter by hand, its difficult like there is alot of drag...

take the torque converter off and try to spin the outer splined shaft and you can't the inner splined shaft turns fine.

    any ideas?

i believe the outer shaft should not move, its fixed to the pump. did you put any trans fluid in the converter before you installed it?

Wait for PaulS to come on,,, I'm thinking when you tighten the tranny down you damaged the pump. How tight did you tighten tranny bolts down? Conv. will have wee bit drag, but not like what you seem to be saying.

    Is that a new converter?

There are three splines and the pump drive that have to engage - you are not getting the converter in all the way....
Or the pilot in the flex plate is the wrong size.

well, pulled the front pump off. looks like the main bushing is messed up... good to catch it now, i guess there was some crap in it. i guess i will take the front pump in and get the bushing and seal replaced. looks like the trans is almost new, which is a good thing.

Are you lining up the converter studs with the holes in the flexplate?
Did you check the pilot hole size in the flexplate and the pilot size on the converter?
Are you sure the converter is all the way in - it has to be further in than flush with the mounting surface of the bellhousing.

whoo whoo. finally got the damn trans bolted up and not binding. what a pain trying to do that yourself.. engine swaying on the engine lift while trying to push a trans on while aligning all the bolts. don't want to do that again.
