I have an AOD from (supposedly) a 92 mustang, and am wanting to install an external cooler in series with the radiator cooler, my question is....the tranny lines are almost directly, one above the other, so which one is the pressure out line? Does the pressure line go to the radiator first then out to the external cooler then to the trans? Thanks
I gorget which is which, but when I ran my AOD cooler I found the answer on the web somewhere. But I chose not to run the lines through the radiator at all. That just seemed to be moving hot liquid to other not so hot liquid. I just ran mine through an external cooler and back to the trans. The radiator only has a couple tubes dedicated for the trans cooler and I dont see the radiator being much cooler than 180 degrees after the engine is up to temp. Id rather it be cooled by the much cooler outside air.
Which cooler line fitting on the AOD transmission is out and which line is in? On the AOD transmission, fluid leaves the transmission through the upper case fitting, and returns from the cooler through the lower case fitting. Please note, this is NOT true for the AODE/4R70W. http://www.becontrols.com/ourfaqs/aodfaq_1.htm#12213308 I found a couple other websites also stating the Bottom is the return line.
I have always installed coolers on street cars with an inline thermostat or route the trans lines to the fluid to air cooler first, then to the radiator in milder climates. That way in the winter, it will heat up faster and keep it closer to operating temp. Some transmissions don't respond well with cold fluid. It really depends on your usage and setup. JMHO
